Hey, BronxLens, way to go. After looking for one, you decided to open your own, huh? Awesome. There are some specific tips from insiders on the Web. Here is ehow. There are several others if you google How to open an art gallery.

I would also recommend the Small Business Administration as a resource. They have lots of programs and advice including some help with financing. There is a program if you have unused unemployment benefits to get those in a lump sum to start a business.

It’s a heck of a lot of work, but can be a great joy too.

Wishing you much success.

An idea worth exploring, at the least. Is there a niche you can fill that doesn’t exist in NYC already?

Call up a gallery you respect and see if you can meet the owner and get their story. Be honest and sincere and you’d be surprised how helpful they’ll be. Offer to buy them lunch or something for their time.

If you have time to spare, see if you can get a job in a gallery to learn how the business is run. You’ll learn a lot of information that way as well!

no matter what exactly you are going to do – try to implement as much of your personality and love for art without being afraid to “not fit the expectations” of your visitors… make it personal. and include friends and people you know – make them multipliers of your message.

i know – sounds naiv and everything, very basic, but it’s in fact truly important too.
