What are some secular songs that could sometimes be considered spiritually significant to you?

“Great Question” (3points)

Making a very long story short, my family and I went to a very unusual church that instead of hymns, they played secular music that fit the message of the sermon.

The sermon was about accepting your geeky “loser” aspects of your personality you try to hide from the world because sometimes they may turn out to be your greatest strengths.

Two of the “hyms” in church were the following:

I Can Only be Me by Stevie Wonder

and a very surprising acoustic cover of Born This Way by Lady Gaga, including the lyrics ” No matter gay, straight or bi. Lesbian, transgendered life”.

I think this could have been uber tacky, but considering the the message, it was very fitting and I felt like I was experiencing these songs in a spiritual way I didn’t think possible.

So anyway, I was wondering if there were any songs that were definitely not meant to be religious that feel spiritual to you when you hear it.

Satisfaction by the Stones, is a great expression of Buddhism’s “First Noble Truth”, the pervasive unsatisfactoriness of the personal life.

And a good counterpoint to that would be Rockapella’s Amazing World, which does a beautiful job of expressing how that world of dissatisfaction is transformed when you get past your fears and illusions and “hit the heart of everything you are”.

Get Together by the Youngbloods. Possibly the best musical expression of Jesus’ directive to Love Thy Neighbor.

An old girl scout song sung around a campfire when I was 8 or 9:
Peace, I ask of thee, oh river.
Peace, peace, peace.
When I learn to live serenely,
Cares will cease.
From the mountains give me courage,
Visions of the day to be
Strength to lead and faith to follow
All are given unto me.
Peace ask of thee, oh river.
Peace, peace, peace.

Stairway to Heaven Led Zeplin
Wish You Were Here Pink Floyd
Free Bird Lynerd Skynyrd
The last two might be just me because they were played at my first husbands funeral.
