Don’t worry about proportions or recipes. The easiest way to do this is to pour the oats into a bowl, add a bunch of sugar, and a bunch of margarine. If you have any vanilla, add a splash. Mash it all together, then add enough hot water to soften the oats but still keep the dough you’ve created solid enough to ball up in your hands. Separate into whatever size cookies you want and bake on a sheet until the cookies are at the desired firmness. If you don’t have an oven, you can fry them over a hotplate.
That’s it, that’s all you need. They’re not amazing, but they’re edible, and I used to eat them all the time when I was broke and trying to get by on about $40 a month in food. I used to call them “welfare cookies.”
