Towing gas milage - reality?

What milage do you ACTUALLY get when you are towing?

What kind of car/truck?
What year?
What milage do you get normally?
Diesel, or gasoline?
How fast are you going?
How much weight are you towing?

We have a ford ecoboost truck and we tow an open trailer with a car on it, and we get around 12 miles to the gallon, sometimes as high as 13. Regular gas. We drive typically 70 MPH. I think the weight of the trailer with the car is 5,500? Not 100% sure.

Friend of mine, with a huge RV, just came back from a cross-country trip and advised by towing his vehicle, behind his RV, he only managed to get 6 mpg at 60 mph.

That trip cost him out the yeng yang in fuel useage.

I have a 2006 Dodge Durango and have pulled a large U-Haul trailer with it. I think the weight was close to 3500 pounds if I remember correctly. I got 12 mpg, regular gasoline, driving at about 60 MPH. If I remember correctly, my regular gas mileage at the time was 16 mpg.
