What music comforts you?

“Great Question” (4points)

What kind of music do you like to listen to when you need some comfort, or to re-center yourself? Does it come from a particular era in your life?

I’ve been listening to a lot of Red Hot Chili Peppers recently and they were one of the first rock bands I got into. I got their first album when I was about 14. I don’t even listen to much rock anymore, but it is definitely still my ‘center.’

Soulful blues like Billie Holiday.

Lots of music comforts me (to include Billie!) .. but nothing so much as this .

Jazz.

Why is Fluther not a site where I can now follow that up with a gif of jazz hands??

For comfort and relaxation, I typically go for quiet, slow classical music (nothing speedy like Flight of the Bumblebee…) or quiet, slow Celtic music. I have several “Celtic Relaxation” CDs that I love.

@WillWorkForChocolate : Have you ever heard of the Afrocelts/Afro Celt Sound System? Not ‘pure’ Celtic music, it’s fusion with West African music. I can’t recommend them highly enough.

I like old time classical music when I’m trying to calm down from stress. I listen to all of the great composers. I like how sometimes the melodies wonder and flow almost like it is searching for some unifying theme but almost never quite gets there. In this regard I enjoy Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart the best. His music makes me think of an idea roaming free through a thick forest looking for a melody. Looking here and there over and over and then sometimes suddenly breaking through into a glorious meadow of melodious sound. Other times the search comes up empty. But such is life.

Motorhead. God knows why.

Danzig is my “I’m pissed-off and I want to stay that way” music. Suicidal Tendencies is more “I’m pissed off but this makes me happier” stuff.

The “I’m relaxing in a hot bath/around a bonfire” music is Clannad or Loreena McKennitt. And Enigma. I can’t get enough of Enigma.

Rob Thomas’s music reaches into my soul and rebalances everything.

@Seek_Kolinahr : Hah, Enigma’s one of my guilty pleasures. Got a favorite song?

@Aesthetic_Mess : And I love Rob Thomas… Well, I got more into Matchbox Twenty than his solo stuff, but I’m a fan in either case. And what a looker ;)

I find comfort in lots of music, but I really like this

Mahler, for me.

Peaceful classical (especially baroque) and/or New Age, like Enya and Celtic Woman.

As gay as it sounds, something like the Fairy Queen Rondeau by Purcell is exactly what I’m thinking of.

Sarah McLachlan. Give me her music and lyrics… and I’m at peace.

@Seek_Kolinahr : Since you brought up comforting angry music, my “I’m pissed off and I want to stay that way” music is Aesthetic Perfection. My “I’m pissed off but this makes me feel happier” would have to be some old school punk like Bad Religion.

My favourite singers’ music comforts me.

I also find cheesy dad rock (like Meat Loaf) comforting. It gives me a sense of freedom (especially if I’m listening to it whilst driving!!!)

That’s hard. “Sadeness” is a good one. Also love “I Love You, I’ll Kill You”. I fell asleep to the LSD album every night all through high school, so that particular mix is ingrained in my soul. ^_^
