I started reading A Series of Unfortunate Events when I was in first grade (so about 6 or 7) but then again I was not a normal child. I read them over and over and over. It was the first book series I became obsessed with. Sometimes I still read them.
They are written for young adults, I believe, so I think the books would be appropriate for 10 year olds, definitely.
The movie was an abomination to the book series.
I think Lemony Snicket is very unique, and if you want to expose your children to different writing styles and different kinds of literature, Snicket is an excellent way to do that. He has a style that is so refreshingly different from a lot of other children’s authors.
Even though I am now 17, I am definitely going to buy his new books.
@MamaCakes The most basic plot of the entire series is that these three orphaned siblings are being sent from place to place to live with various relatives and other places, and their first guardian is the main antagonist. The children’s parents were very rich and left them a large fortune which they would inherit when the eldest child turned 18. The antagonist, Count Olaf, tries to kidnap the children all throughout the series so that he can gain the fortune.
