How is Facebook updating my page if I didn't refresh the page at all?

I want to know the technical and programing issue. When I refresh the HTML page I get HttpResponse but what happens when I don’t, how is the server updating me with new comments and updates if I didn’t Call it? I don’t think they use web socket like a chat room.

They’ve probably put something like this in there somewhere.

<meta http-equiv=“refresh” content=“5” >

Which would make the page refresh every 5 seconds.
