if you dont know the cause, then dont try to treat it. try to think of the ways the cut could have been caused and act on that.

A little antiseptic wont hurt but it sounds infected. You need to take your dog to the Vet.

No, take your dog to the vet ASAP. What type of dog do you have? Is it on the bridge of his/her nose or the actual tip?

I think you can comfortably treat its nose with a triple antibiotic ointment, but also take it to the vet for evaluation. Perhaps it needs some stitches or has an abscess or needs some antibiotics by mouth? Best not to wait.

@Dog, mcbealer: This said, it’s not that bad. It’s on the top of her nose. I’ll take a photo. Back in five. It’s 5:30am, so I can’t take her to a vet right now, but I certainly will do if it gets worse.

Did it bleed at all? It looks like she did it on a briar or stick. I’m thinking her own saliva might be all it needs to heal.

Yeah, she keeps licking it. I think it should be okay, I just thought it was worth getting a second opinion seen as I can. (Yay, Internet!)

I don’t think it bled, but I’ve only just come downstairs and noticed it now. It might have bled a little, but she’s licked it off if it did.

Yeah, I agree. My dog Tilly stubbed the bridge of her nose (right where it changes from fur to flesh) on something a few years back, and it healed itself as well. Check this link out. Most people agreed there are definite healing properties in their saliva.

Is your dog a shephard? Cute. It looks fine—a scrape from a twig or something. Dogs are pretty resilient about scrapes. I’m sure she will be fine. It if starts to get infected—which it doesn’t look to be in the photo—take her to the vet.

sweet… yeah, the antibacterial route wouldn’t be good because they are intended for external use only, and she’s guaranteed to lick it.

@pixiequeen12: She’s an alsatian, dalmatian, border collie cross, and probably something else in there too. I’ll post a photo if I can get her to stay still long enough! She has a ginger face and paws, and a black and white spotted body. Pretty mental.

@mcbealer: Okay, I’ll give it a quick wipe to get rid of the bit of fluff that’s in it now and then leave it be.

the picture is a bit blurry, but it looks fairly clean to me. I would leave it alone but keep a close eye on it. I doubt it will get too bad.

RH: Aww, I’m sorry she got hurt :( I cringe whenever my dog gets an injury, however slight (she’s my ‘first kid’!)...IAC, keep an eye on it, if it starts to change color from pink to yellow or other strange discoloration, or if it continues to bleed, seek the assistance of a vet asap. Otherwise, I’d leave it alone (since she’s likely to lick the antibiotic ointment off anyway).

What a gorgeous dog, richardhenry! It gives me dog hunger (as mine are 3,000 miles away right now) just to look at her.

You should probably take your dog to the vet to get it looked at. In the mean time you can use neosporin to treat the cut, this is what we used on our dog and it worked just fine.
