Would it be allowed for me to post a question asking people to evaluate my mental health?

“Great Question” (2points)

Lately, I have had 3 separate instances of me doubting my own sanity, directly because of some fellow members disagreeing with me on some of my more extreme views on things.

It is not that they have caused me to doubt my arguments, and thus question my positions, that would be normal. It is actually the complete opposite, in that my positions are so extreme, and their counter arguments so unconvincing to me, that I have to ask myself if so many smart people can be wrong, or if I am a total nut.

I am not sure if it would fall under personal promotion or something, or if it would be against any other rule as it is directly related to me, Fluther, and its users.

So, would I be allowed to ask a question, where I encourage people to judge my mental condition, based on what they have learned from me from my time on Fluther?

Go for it: it’s free.

I don’t know, but I hope we would have the good sense not to try it.

(There’s no limit to the number of smart people who can be wrong.)

poisonedantidote's avatar

@Jeruba True, just the counter arguments I am given are also arguments held by the vast majority of the population.

I think I’ll give it a shot, if it gets moderated its no big deal.

just do not doubt your sanity because of things said by the few insane jellies we have on here.

Might you be able to refer to some specific threads where you thought your answers/opinions differed greatly from most of the collective’s? You don’t seem particularly outrageous or disagreeable to me. You seem pretty level headed and logical : )

poisonedantidote's avatar

I went ahead and asked in the general section.

@Kardamom It would take me a while to find, this is regarding some of my more extreme positions on things. e.g. lets abolish government, the police are bad, and so on.

Bend over to the computer, and open your mouth widely at the screen, and say Awwww.

If you actually did that, you’re crazy.

I think we are not the best bunch to ask, we are all slightly nuts?

I don’t see why not. But then, I already answered it.

‘In THAT direction,’ the Cat said, waving its right paw round, ‘lives
a Hatter: and in THAT direction,’ waving the other paw, ‘lives a March
Hare. Visit either you like: they’re both mad.’

‘But I don’t want to go among mad people,’ Alice remarked.

‘Oh, you can’t help that,’ said the Cat: ‘we’re all mad here. I’m mad.
You’re mad.’

‘How do you know I’m mad?’ said Alice.

‘You must be,’ said the Cat, ‘or you wouldn’t have come here.’

wundayatta's avatar

Nope. You can’t ask the question.

I did see some of your responses about banning the government and disliking the police. I kind of thought you were saying those things mostly as a rant, because sometimes the gov and the police can do things that are annoying. But I live in the U.S. so for me, having anarchy instead of government would cause a lot of damage to a lot of people. So would not having police. I think over here, and probably in the UK, the police are generally looked upon as something good, someone who’s there to help you if you have a crime being perpetrated upon you. If my house was being robbed, I’d call the police and know that they would be here lickety split.

I don’t think most police officers in the U.S. are corrupt, wheras as you and others have pointed out, they seem to have that problem elsewhere. Mexico comes to mind.

But if you saw any of the footage of the Sandy Hook massacre here in the US, right before Christmas, you would see that the police acted in a manner that was heroic and brave. I think our police are generally heroic and brave, or at least well intentioned, but they ususually don’t get the recognition that they got with regards to the Sandy Hook tragedy, just because it was so big and awful. But our police do many good deeds every day that go un-thanked and un-noticed. Their daily duties are just taken for granted, and that’s good, because I would hope they would not have to deal with huge tragedies on a day to day basis.

And after Hurricane Sandy, the government went in to help people, they didn’t go in and start looting or killing people, so again, at least in the US, government (although not perfect) is a much better alternative than anarchy.

I don’t think you are wrong or crazy to have whatever beliefs you have, because they are based upon your own experiences. If you lived somewhere else, under different circumstances, you would likely have different beliefs and opinions, that’s all.

@ shippy – hehehe, good one, I agree!

Yeahright's avatar

Would you walk into a madhouse and ask the others if they thought you were mad?

zensky's avatar

@Yeahright You wouldn’t know, right?

Yeahright's avatar

@zensky It takes one to know one ;)

zensky's avatar

I always say that and assume I am the problem. No-one brings me down better than me.

wundayatta's avatar

Yeah, @zensky, I know that one. We should cut a deal. Neither of us is allowed to self-denigrate, and we only get to denigrate each other. LOL.

zensky's avatar

Sounds good to me, wundele. You first.

wundayatta's avatar

I will. When you need it. The other rule is has to be honest. No fake shit.

Flutter, in my experience, has what seems to be a proportionally large number of self avowed mentally disabled, depressed, or emotionally handicapped members. I should think you would find more than a few experts here.

Seek's avatar

@zigmund Honestly, I think it takes a certain type of person to flourish in the “virtual” world as a real-life person.

Here, we aren’t avatars or characters, we’re actual people with actual problems that we actually discuss. People without real issues don’t seem to hang around for long. They probably have a lot of meatspace friends that are texting them to hit the club. Or whatever it is people with friends do.
