“Great Question” (0points)

One of my favorite residents in the Alzheimer unit has a piano and an accordian.

Her mood improves greatly when she plays but she doesn’t always remember what she can play or the lyrics.

If I ask her to play a song like My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean she can usually start somewhere. Sometimes if we don’t remember all the words and either move on or the song turns into a bit of a medley.

Lately she has been fixating on this song and has gotten stuck. It is Into the Deep Blue Sea. I think she is mixing the words up with another song that sounds similar but I don’t remember the lyrics of either of them. So I can’t prompt her.

If any one can get us untangled or help us out with other song suggestions. So we can both move forward it would be appreciated.

She doesn’t seem to be able to read music any more and my piano skills don’t even hardly register so it has to be something simple that she knew in the past.

Guessing by the lady’s age, might it be The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by Harold Arlen? It’s an old standard.

Thanks for trying. I don’t think that is it. I tried based on age too. She usually thinks she is a young girl when she starts these sessions.

However memory doesn’t appear to be linear.

She has daughters and granddaughters, I think it is safe to assume she taught them since her father taught her and her sister.

I think these are more like Oh Susannah! Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, she also seems to remember some gospel but I am worse guessing those then the little ditties she plays. I remember a few from The Beginning Piano for kids.

Hmmm, here is a Children’s Song that might be it. You have to scroll down and look over on the right to see the lyrics. Something about itty bitty fishies : )

That might be it! I will try it tomorrow. Thanks.

Deep blue sea, darling
On a deep, deep blue sea
Deep blue sea, darling
On a deep, deep blue sea

And it was mama
That got drowned in
Out in that deep blue sea

Dig his grave, darling
With a silver, silver spade
Dig his grave, darling
With a silver, silver spade

And it was brother
That got drowned in
Out in that deep blue sea

Drop him down, darling
With a golden, golden chain
Drop him down, darling
With a golden, golden chain

And it was daddy
That got drowned in
Out in that deep blue sea

It was daddy
That got drowned in
Out in that deep blue sea

Is this the song?

It could be this version by the weavers:

The lyrics are presented in the video with the music in the background!

Pete Seeger’s version uses these lyrics:

Deep Blue Sea, Baby, Deep Blue Sea (3x)
It was Willy what got drowned in the Deep Blue Sea

Dig his grave with a silver spade (3x)
It was Willy what got drowned in the Deep Blue Sea

Lower him down with a golden chain (3x)
It was Willy what got drowned in the Deep Blue Sea

Wrap him up with a silken shroud (3x)
It was Willy what got drowned in the Deep Blue Sea

Golden sun bring it back to me (3x)
It was Willy what got drowned in the Deep Blue Sea

Deep Blue Sea, Baby, Deep Blue Sea (3x)
It was Willy what got drowned in the Deep Blue Sea
It was Willy what got drowned in the…Deep…Blue…Sea

I found a completely different song that may fit the bill here:

I didn’t see your posts til tonight @Dr_Lawrence I will give them a shot tomorrow. I liked Seeger’s version.

I tried Kardamom’s and no bites.

But regardless I appreciate the effort. I was pretty overwhelmed with where to start on this one. : )
