May I please request prayers/positive thoughts for my husband and his family?

“Great Question” (12points)

My husband’s grandmother was recently diagnosed with cancer. It was caught entirely too late, and she wasn’t even considered a candidate for chemo, as it had already spread to her lymph, and she was too weak.

She was just taken to the hospital for seizures and they told us she’s got a brain tumor. They don’t expect her to make it through today.

I’m not really sure how to comfort my husband, and he can’t even take off to go to the hospital, because he’s pulling his own uncle (who works for him) off the job so that his uncle can go be with her.

Please will you pray or send positive energy to my husband and his family, for their peace and comfort?

And we were supposed to go spend Easter with her. She won’t even get to meet her new great-grandbaby now. I hate death.

My dad’s ex-wife just died early Monday morning, so we were already grieving for her. This is the suckass week of death. And they say it comes in threes…

poisonedantidote's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate I was not going to answer this due to my reputation as the militant atheist and skeptic, and to be honest I don’t even know how to word a response that wont piss you off, but if it helps, I am going to church in 10 minutes, I’ll ask the priest and his followers to say a prayer, and of course you have my most hopeful thoughts.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@poisonedantidote I appreciate that. See? You didn’t piss me off. ;)

@WillWorkForChocolate I am so sorry for how you are feeing right now. ;(

I can understand exactley what you are going through. Don’t believe the “comes in 3’s” you will just set yourself up for more anxiety. More than 3 years ago death visited me 4 times. My father died of cancer, and this is going to sound strange but I felt like knowing the time of death as apposed to not knowing was a bit more of a blessing.

In silence I will say this just for you and your family as I did so many times for my family.

Dear Jesus, Divine Physician, Healer of the Sick.

We call upon you and ask your help for our loved ones
who are suffering from cancer.
We entrust them to your loving care.
They are your children and they are in pain.
Give them the ability to know in their hearts
that you are with them in this difficult time.

Give them strength and healing.

Comfort them in their fears,
soothe their anxiety,
and let them rest securely in your arms.

Help those who care for them.
Give insight to researchers that they may discover cures.
Give patience and energy to doctors and nurses so that
they will care for them with grace and love.

For us, their families, their friends and their community,
we need your courage and strength,
to be with them and help them bear their burdens.
Give us joy, peace and confidence in you
so that like Mary, your mother,
we may stand with them in faith and trust,
witnessing to your healing love.
For you are blessed, for ever and ever. Amen.

Just got an update: they’ve apparently gotten her stabilized for now, but she’s unconscious. They don’t know if she’ll regain consciousness, but they’re going to transport her home with 24 hour hospice care. They don’t expect her to be with us for much longer.

@nofurbelowsbatgirl Wow, thank you so much for that!

Arewethereyet's avatar

I’m so sad for your family, but very impressed that she will be home with family around her. It’s so much better to be in your own world surrounded by love than in the strange environment of hospital xxx

Rarebear's avatar

I’m sorry Nina. This is a difficult time. My thoughts will be with you.

Bellatrix's avatar

Sending you and yours a mental hug. Very sad time for you all. I’m glad her family will have time to say goodbye to her at home. You will have a final opportunity to be with her in the place she loves.

@WillWorkForChocolate
Its no problem. I have an ache in my heart for you and your family. Feeling remorse is one of my biggest downfalls. I was walking past a smaller tree today that a car had driven over and because of that it had to be cut down, all I can say is for a moment I felt an overwhelming sensation in my throat and then I felt like I needed to go on a tree hugging crusade…I know, I know its weird..but if I could save anything that thrives from dying, I would.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate We worked with hospice when my s/o’s mother was dying of breast cancer. They are amazing. Make full use of them and ask questions. And I hope your family can pull together to take care of her. It’s a lot of work so many hands help a lot.

Blueroses's avatar

Of course, you are in my thoughts, dear girlfriend. Be well and celebrate her life while you have her.

Kardamom's avatar

No one should ever have to bear this alone. We are hear for you, to boost you up to be strong for you and your husband. No matter what, just know that we are here, as your foundation and your support system.

Berserker's avatar

All of you are in my thoughts. What a crap thing to have to happen, I’m sending strength from afar.

Plucky's avatar

You and yours are in my thoughts. I hope she passes peacefully. Sending you positive vibes and comforting hugs.

augustlan's avatar

Love, peace, positive thoughts, and hugs, from me to you and yours. <3

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Thanks so much, everyone. It may sound ridiculous, but kind words and support from an online community really do help.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate We’re here for you. How are things going?

CWOTUS's avatar

Hey, if our words here help, just think how great an actual backrub would feel now. I’m just sayin’ is all.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe She made it through the night. I don’t know much more than that right now.

Strauss's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate Glad to hear she’s home. Make sure to take care of her (especially family members), because they can experience a great deal of stress during these times too.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate Hugs and kind thoughts headed your way.

bookish1's avatar

I am glad to hear that she gets to go home as well. I will keep holding all of you in my thoughts and prayers.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Okay, they didn’t release her to go home. She’s now at a hospice facility. She’s still unconscious, and her breathing is getting really shallow and labored off and on.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate Sorry, that wasn’t a GA. But having been through this that means it’s getting close to the end. I’m sorry you and your family are going through this. My prayers are with you.

nofurbelowsbatgirl's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate I am really sorry. I have also been through this and I agree with @Adirondackwannabe.

@WillWorkForChocolate Big hugs to you and your family. XX. I will pray again for you and your family. ;(

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

She doesn’t have long now. Hoping she can hold on through the night so I can get my husband out there in the morning to say his goodbyes.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate My prayers are with you. Pull together as a family and concentrate on the good memories.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

The whole family is gathered here now. I’m just glad we made it before she gave up. We may end up spending the night here at the hospice place, if she’s still holding on.

bookish1's avatar

{{{{{{{{{{{ @WillWorkForChocolate }}}}}}}}}}}}}
Peace to you and your family.

Sunny2's avatar

Amen.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Well, we’re home again and it will be nice to get a full night’s sleep in my own bed, after napping on the floor, a cot, and in various uncomfortable chairs… UGH.

Nanny’s still holding on for some reason. We don’t understand it. She’s in tremendous pain and we’ve all told her that it’s okay for her to go on and be with her husband, but she just won’t let go. I hate seeing her suffering like she is, and keep hoping my mother-in-law is going to call and tell us that she finally let go. :(

But, at least the whole family could make the long drive to see her, including her best friend from New York.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate Are the hospice people giving her morphine? When My s/o’s mother went through this hospice gave us morphine like candy. We we’re giving her almost lethal doses so she wasn’t hurting.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

She’s getting morphine, and some other medication called adavan or something like that, for anxiety. She’s getting quite a bit and they’ve already increased her dosage multiple times, but she’s still scrunching up her face and moaning.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate I’m so sorry you and your family are going through this. It sucks as a way to go. My prayers are with you.

nofurbelowsbatgirl's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate When my father passed we also kept telling him it was ok to go. He did not go until for some odd reason we had all stepped out of the room for a moment he never liked us to suffer for any reason he did not even like to hear or see us cry. I am still praying for you and your family.

Footprints In The Sand.
One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints.
Other times there were one set of footprints.
This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life
When I was suffering from anguish, sorrow, or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints.
So I said to the Lord, “You promised me, Lord,
That if I followed you, you would walk with me always.
But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life
There have only been one set of prints in the sand.
Why, When I have needed you most, you have not been there for me?”
The Lord replied,
“The times when you have seen only one set of footprints
Is when I carried you.”

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@nofurbelowsbatgirl I’ve always loved Footprints! :)

nofurbelowsbatgirl's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate Then it is appropriate ;)

Nanny finally passed away, a few minutes ago. We’re all relieved that her suffering is finally over, but we’ll miss her terribly and this is going to change a lot of things.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Oh god I am so so sorry. Treasure the good memories and just shut out life for a bit. Keep the family around you and my prayers are with you.

Bellatrix's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate, sad for your family but I’m glad she is out of pain and at peace now. You know I’m sending you positive thoughts and hugs.
