On my Facebook an ad was placed on my wall claiming that numerology can help to solve problems.

1 + 1 = 2 and 2 + 2 = 4
Numerology not a valid science.

Numerology is not legitimate. Ergo, there can be no genuine proof that it is legitimate.

I can prove it if you send me $17 (17 being the prime prime, because it is made of 1 and 7, both of which are prime, and 7 being the “cube” number because if you add the opposite numbers on dice (a cube) it always adds up to 7).

See how I did that? If it was provable, everyone would use it.

Mystical, supernatural or (choose your adjective) practices are by definition not scientific. While I could conceivably provide you with a numerology reading, using techniques that date back past the time scientific method, I can not give you a guaranteed outcome.

From the article on numerology at Skeptic’s Dictionary.

When you get your reading, you may find yourself ignoring the parts that don’t fit you at all, and focusing on those parts that do seem to fit. They may actually fit you or they may fit your image of how you would like to be. No matter; if they fit, you may fall for it. You may even be tempted to go one step further and call your own personal psychic on one of the “friends” psychic hotlines. (I think the $9 numerology reading might be cheaper, though.) The testimonials for numerology and the telephone psychics are quite similar. Marriages are saved, jobs are landed, personal problems are resolved and love is found.

…numbers give the quackery an aura of both scientific and mystical authoritativeness, especially if complex statistical analysis is involved.

…Different languages have different alphabets; different cultures use different calendars. It is unreasonable enough to think the universe is arranged according to numerical transcriptions of names, but to think that there are several equivalent transcriptions to accommodate cultural differences stretches the limits of credibility almost to infinity.

The assumptions on which numerology is based as not empirically testable. The logic is circular and thus always is internally consistent but it has no relevance to anything in the real world.

When anyone supports their arguments based on authorities which can never be tested and theoretically found to be false, they therefore cannot be ever demonstrated to be true.

Reading a basic textbook on the scientific method should help anyone who is still puzzled understand the nature of evidence from a scientific perspective.

Numerology is like astrology. Entertainment, not science.

@mattbrowne I tend to agree, I think it’s all a money making scam.
Thanks @gasman that’s so nice and true in a sense.

No, it is simply another foolish pseudo-science that scammers may use to take money from naïve people.
