You’ve got me baffled. Google Earth shows “Cape May – Lewes” as Route 9 (since a roadway itself won’t show up in the photos, all I can see is the line on the representation of Delaware Bay). But Mapquest shows the same representation as “Cape May – Lewes Ferry” ... and I’d be more inclined to believe that, as both representations show the Jersey end to terminate in an apparent waterway. That is, the roadway for Rt. 9 seems to terminate at a shore, and then the ferry runs out the mouth of a waterway between Cape May Point and North Cape May.

So if I were you my next step would be to look up information on the Cape May – Lewes Ferry and talk to someone there.

Without any other knowledge of it than the length, I would say that that’s going to be a major-league size ferry, one which takes all sizes of cars, trucks, SUVs and even full-size articulated tractor-trailer rigs. It wouldn’t make sense to run a ferry line of that length over that stretch of water and not haul a lot, including any passenger car going. This isn’t the Block Island Ferry, after all (if I’m thinking of the right one), that takes “passengers and bicycles only”.

Assume with confidence that if you can drive it, and you get to the slip on time, you and your vehicle can ride the ferry.

Could you be thinking of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel? It connects the Norfolk/Virginia beach area with the part of Virginia that’s located on the Delmarva peninsula.

I didn’t take the ferry, but I did find a better way to drive from VA to NJ and back. I used Highway 13 that goes through Delaware and bypasses the I-95 DC/Baltimore traffic.

I’ve taken that ferry, but it’s been a while. If I remember right, it left every hour or two, and it took about an hour to cross the channel. You can drive your car right onto the boat. If it’s called a private road, it’s probably because the ferry is run by a company rather than the government. (You have to pay to make the crossing.) It’s not the fastest or most efficient way to travel, but it’s fun and different.
