I can see no relationship. U Mass Dartmouth seems to have been founded as a “Textiles” college when New England was heavily into the textile business and later incorporated into the U Mass system. What is the relationship to Dartmouth College? see

No relationship.at all. Dartmouth College is a private, Ivy League college in Hanover, New Hampshire. UMass Dartmouth is in North Dartmouth, MA and is part of that state’s university system.

Both the college and the town were named after (and in honor of) William Legge, the Earl of Dartmouth.

I knew that. My family all went to Dartmouth. I know all the words to Eliezar Wheelock [who also founded the Lebanon Congregationalist Church].I just can’t understand how the Massachusetts “Dartmouth” can use the name.

Unless it was something Dartmouth College set up for its own reasons. The Hanover/Lebanon NH area was very big into textiles in the early 20th century. I was born there. My grandfather owned the Lebanon Woolen Mills.

My S/O has been twitting me about your “high and mighty Dartmouth” since the news broke.

btw Daniel Webster went there.

Eliezar was minister of a congregational church in Lebanon CT before he gathered up his family, gradus ad Parnassum and 500 gallons of rum and went to found Lebanon NH and Dartmouth College.

I just thought the college might have had some interest in setting up a trade school in anotther part of New England.

found the answer—the puzzling reference to “textiles” came from a U Mass Dartmouth history recently published “two small technical colleges in the fading textile cities of New Bedford and Fall River . . . ” who merged to form the nucleus of U Mass Dartmouth in the TOWN of Dartmouth along the SE coast between Fall River and New Bedford.
