where should i stay in Buffalo NY?

Going to Buffalo for work (not for Niagra Falls) and looking for a fun area of town to stay in, preferably where we can walk to some bars and restaurants. How's downtown? Anyone familiar with the area?

I grew up near Buffalo, but never lived there. I always liked visiting Allentown--funky shops and restaurants. There's also the Delaware district which is a bit more yuppy and then there's Elmwood Ave.

Downtown has more of an energy to it now than it did 10 years ago. There is some OK theater: Studio Arena Theater does some progressive stuff.
