Once, many years ago, for something that wasn’t my fault.
Just before lunch time, my boss (a regional director) was getting reamed out on the phone by his boss (vice president of the company). It was about something I’d brought to his attention numerous times, but he had never bothered to correct the problem. Once his boss got on his case about it, he tried to say he’d had no clue it was going on. To ‘prove’ his point and save face, he called me in to his office (while the vp was still on the line, listening to our exchange) and proceeded to scream and cuss at me (why didn’t you tell me about this problem, god damnit?!?) He wouldn’t let me get in a word edgewise.
I was completely shocked, wanted to cry but didn’t right then. I stalked out, got my purse and left the building. Apparently, he assumed I’d gone to lunch, but I actually went home – with no intention of returning. When I hadn’t come back after lunch time, he called me at home to see what was up. I told him that after he’d thrown me under the bus like that and treated me so horribly, I wasn’t coming back in. He made the situation worse, saying things like “Oh, don’t be a baby about this. We’re all adults here. Get over it.” I told him that he was the one acting like a child, but assured him that I would, in fact, get over it. “But not today.”
I went back to work the next day, and he apologized. Prior to this occurrence, my boss and I got along great and I considered him a personal friend. While we continued to work well together, things were never the same afterward.

Why are you getting cussed out so often? I’ve been working for over 30 years, and that was the only time it ever happened.
