Are you a nerd? Am I? Do you have any nerd tendencies?

Okay. I really like science fiction. The original Star Trek is my favorite series of all time. I have all three seasons on DVD and (years ago) have even, gulp!, gone to more than one convention. However, I do not consider myself to be a Trekkie or a Trekker. I have every Monty Python episode on DVD and the movies as well. Yes, I have kissed a woman before and am not a virgin. Hell, I have 3 daughters and 8 grandkids. Even with all this, I never though of myself as a nerd until this morning when I caught myself downloading the Doctor Who Theme to my iPhone. Can any of you give me even a little hope? Am I really a nerd? I like sports. Does that help my cause?

sports aren’t helping you cause your nerdness over power your sportiness so all in I’m sorry, your a nerd….

playthebanjo's avatar

would it make you feel better if we said yes or no?

babygalll's avatar

If you feel like a nerd. Then you are a nerd.

Has anyone ever called you a nerd?

eambos's avatar

Is “nerd” carrying a positive or negative connotation?

AstroChuck's avatar

I guess my question was a little tongue in cheek. What I was really looking for was nerd tendencies that other may have, even though they might not consider themselves nerds.
And although I never avoided nerds in school I never really hung out with them either. I was never in the “popular crowd” but was always kind of in the middle, I think. Of course, I was in the Science Fiction Club one year in high school. But this one cute girl I liked was in the club so… Am I just fooling myself?

I am a nerd as well. My answer to Love? explains it all. Points to other nerds that know where it came from.

you are definitely a nerd. but its fine cuz nerds are in right now.

gailcalled's avatar

Please define “nerd”. It is one of those vague nouns that has many definitions, depending on whom you ask. Personally, I would be honored – if I knew the connotation fitted my Zeitgeist.

playthebanjo's avatar

Happy 6k day, gailcalled.

AstroChuck's avatar

It is all subjective, of course. But I think most have similar ideas of what nerd means. Anyway, does’nt anyone have any nerdy things they do that they would like to share?
and I second that, gail. Congrats!

gailcalled's avatar

@Play. Thanks.

And Ed McMahon and his check will be arriving when? I want to get my hair done.

AstroChuck's avatar

Ed McMahon better hold on to those checks if he does’nt want to be evicted!

gailcalled's avatar

@Astro; that one flew by me. Evicted from where? The poorhouse; prison, the Home for the Aged? Is he dead?

gailcalled's avatar

Astro: Never mind. I found the answer on Google. Poor Ed, literally, I suppose.

SuperMouse's avatar

I wouldn’t be caught dead in public without my pocket protector and I’m not a nerd, and last week my glasses broke and I’ve had them held together with masking tape ever since.

xyzzy's avatar

Congratulations, you’re not a nerd. You’re a geek; specifically a sci-fi geek. So you might as well break out the pointy ears and the klingon dictionary, ‘case there aint no cure.

(BTW, as a nerd, I must point out that with today’s technology, having three kids does not conclusively prove that you have ever had sex.)

janbb's avatar

With an avatar like that, you have to ask? ;)

Actually, some of my best friends are nerds….Me? If bringing a book to work, driving to a cemetery at lunch to read it, never watching Lost or American Idol and never having had a pedicure are nerdy, then I guess I’m one too. (But maybe it doesn’t count, since I’m over 50 anyway.)

AstroChuck's avatar

Hey, I never dressed up at any of the Star Trek cons. No pointy ears for me. Maybe a pointed head, ‘tho.

AstroChuck's avatar

What do you mean with an avatar like that? I also have never watched American Idol or Lost. Is that some nerd thing I don’t know about.
And my avatar is cool!

janbb's avatar

I@AstroChuck – I just read the part about your 8 grandchildren. That’s why your picture reminds me of my 5th grade boyfriend!

You’re not a nerd, just old like me! :) :)

AstroChuck's avatar

Actually, I’m only 46. But when you have a daughter that spits out a couple sets of twins you rack up the grandkids pretty quickly.

buster's avatar

I got some nerdy looking glasses.

I think checking Fluther more then 10 times a day would be considered being nerdy. =] But as a nerd, I say being nerdy is awesome. Also I read a lot, and enjoy math. Oh and like spiffy new gadgets.

mirza's avatar

Nope. I hated nerdy kids throughout high school and at some point I used to make fun of them ( but i was not a bully). I dislike Sci-fi for the most part (except one tv show). I hate math with a passion and would love to go back in time to shoot whoever invented calculus. However, I am good with computers and work as a web designer. I have been referred to as a hippie and I was described by a wired reporter as a “machine working around the clock to eradicate traditions and institutions.” And I do read a lot.

Lost_World's avatar

Haha computers and online gaming is so widly played and used the word nerd almost means nothing.

Trance24's avatar

@mirza you do realize without math, especially calculus there would be no Fluther because there would be no internets. Or anything else for that matter.

I was once given a stuffed tribble by a guy was dating that I met at a Star Trek convention. I didn’t dress up, though, I was their publicist. That’s my story, and I am sticking to it.

mcbealer's avatar

I heart nerds.

breedmitch's avatar

My third grade teacher regularly called me and my circle of friends “nerds”. We happily adopted the phrase and (oh my god, I’m just remembering this now!) I embroidered all our names on a handmade pillow under the title “Nerd Club”. This was the same year I began my professional jacks career.
I’ve shared too much.

jlm11f's avatar

we were discussing nerd vs. geek in the chat room recently. i was arguing that geek is cool while nerd is pathetic. not that it matters, because i am probably a bit of both :)

margeryred's avatar

I am a nerdy hot chick… people can’t figure me out. I do the whole computer geek thing…but I was a cheerleader (in my last life it was so long ago now), and I can go out and look hot, flirt, dance, wear hip clothing…and do the whole help me I’m cute and get a guy to do what I need/want! ;) (sorta joking…just having fun tongue in cheek too)

I think babygalll has it figured out…. YOU ARE A NERD IF YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE A NERD!!! (Geek and nerd are synonymous to me)

I totally love REVENGE OF THE NERDS… I am a fan of the underdogs!

mzgator's avatar

What’s wrong with being a nerd or geek? Rock whoever you are! Everyone is different, that’s what makes this life I live fun, worthwhile and entertaining. It’s not about what you look like, but what’s inside. My daughter is beautiful, with long blonde hair and tall like a model . No one would ever guess…. She’s a nerd and proud of it!

AstroChuck's avatar

Let’s all chant proudly!!
Nerd! Nerd! Nerd! Nerd! Nerd! Nerd! Nerd! Nerd! Nerd! Nerd! Nerd! Nerd! Nerd! Nerd! Nerd! Nerd! Nerd! Nerd! Nerd! Nerd! Nerd!

gailcalled's avatar

@AC; speak up.. I didn’t have my hearing aid on.

AstroChuck's avatar

NERD! NERD! NERD! NERD! NERD! NERD! NERD! NERD! NERD! NERD! NERD! NERD! NERD! NERD! NERD! NERD!

loser's avatar

no, I’m a loser

mcbealer's avatar

nerds R us

margeryred's avatar

Nerd, Nerd, Nerd…. to infinity…

flameboi's avatar

O.k. so what’s with the nerds, I think I am one, (i read a lot, and I’m concerned about things most people don’t) but, I’m a nerd who modeled for Generra, drives a nice car and has a great job, so, when I find guys who atteneded high school with me and and used to call me nerd because they were “popular” and stuff like that… is weird becuase the nerd is the patron and the guy is the waiter, store clerk and so on… the nerd tends to have more fun in the adult years
