Looks like it falls firmly under “silly love songs”.

Well, it’s an indy love anthem, but I am not sure what category it would be placed in, other than “Pop”.

glacial's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr What’s wrong with that? I’d like to know.

Seek's avatar

Didn’t say there was anything wrong with it.

@glacial – Here I go again!

It’s just pop, that’s all. Indie pop, but still pop.

I wouldn’t use the word “silly” unless I want to indicate that I disapprove it, I look down on it, to whatever degree.

Edit above: I disapprove of it.

“The term “indie” had been used for some time to describe artists on independent labels (and the labels themselves), ...”
How does the song/piece of music tell me that it is produced on independent label?

flo (13313points)“Great Answer” (0points)
glacial's avatar

@flo That is how it was originally defined, but as the Wikipedia article continues:

“indie” quickly became shorthand for a genre whose defining conventions were identified as jangling guitars, a love of ‘60s pop, and melodic power pop song structures

So the genre is not currently considered to be limited to songs produced by “independent” labels; it’s defined by the style of music.

@glacial
Okay, but why not use anther word for ” jangling guitars, a love of ‘60s pop, and melodic power pop song structures”? and leave the word indie for independent label?

I have no idea. Perhaps if our language were a planned thing, for example, if we could foresee all the different genres of music that would eventually exist, and had to line them up and name them, we might have chosen a different word for it. But names for things aren’t chosen with such careful consideration; they just happen over time, often with subtle shifts in perspective.

flo's avatar

It doesn’t have to be a planned thing at all in my opinion.

@flo Are you suggesting that we go ahead and rename the genre? How would that work?

flo's avatar

Who it is made by, where it is made, how it is made, etc. don’t have any information about what it is. Is what I presented logical?

flo (13313points)“Great Answer” (0points)
glacial's avatar

Not really. I was asking how a well-established term could be thrown out by the two of us, and replaced by another term of our choosing. I mean, who would care what we think?

flo's avatar

Is 2+2=4 “Nor really.” That is your answer.

The rest of your last post is just you going elsewhere.

flo (13313points)“Great Answer” (0points)
glacial's avatar

@flo I wasn’t going elsewhere.

I asked: “How would that work?”
You answered as if I meant: “How should we name it?”,
but what I actually meant was: “How can we convince anyone to accept a new name?”

So, your response was not logical (at least, that is not how I would put it, but you did ask).

It is not really important, is it? This conversation can’t possibly result in a new name for a well-established genre.

@glacial “Are you suggesting that we go ahead and rename the genre? How would that work?”
You just reminded me of this conversation:
“Doesn’t this kitchen need a renovation?”
“Where are we going to get the money?”

flo (13313points)“Great Answer” (0points)
glacial's avatar

Okey dokey.

flo's avatar

@glacial I was just showing that the “where are we going to get the money” is really not going elsewhere, they are going further ahead. I was correcting myself.

Does anyone remember what this conversation was about?

Love doesn’t come in a minute,
Sometimes it doesn’t come at all.
I only know that when I’m in it,
It isn’t silly, it isn’t silly, Love isn’t silly at all!

flo's avatar

@hearkat Exactly right.
