Granted, @glacial, all the characters are pure stereotypes, but that was precisely what writer Emeric Pressburger intended this World War II propagandist film to populated by. Each character is a symbol of how he, a refugee from Nazi Germany, felt about the war. I adore this film (as I do all Pressburger-Powell films) and would be quite happy to have the prelude to its remarkable score played at my funeral.
