I’ve learned not to assume things the hard way, because my assumptions about people are usually wrong, and I end up either getting them pissed off, or me very embarrassed, or both.

I now take people at their word, and if I am still in error, I say their words back to them as the reason i acted one way or another.

Even if I have made some assumptions, I realize they are assumptions and could be completely wrong. I usually ask questions to find out the reason behind someone’s actions. Although, with close relatives like spouses and parents I think sometime I think I know them so well, and my own emotions get entagled in the whole thought process that I make the mistake of assuming too much.

I don’t judge or make too many assumptions, I agree with @zenvelo I have found I am often wrong. However…I do notice dysfunctional behaviors and communication styles and note them as red flags which I am usually right about.

If someone does something that is illogical or surprising, I will try to think of a logical reason why they might have done what they did. If I can’t, then I go to “Plan B” which is what I was trying not to think of: they’re evil, they’re backstabbers, they’re crazy, whatever it originally appeared to be on the surface.

Not usually since I tend to overanalylize everything., but yes I can be biased at times.
