I recently bought an iPhone 5s and received a message that I was running low on data storage memory. I have 1 gigabyte and am considering increasing it to 2. Do you think this is a good idea?

I thought they came with a minimum of 8 gigs.
Do you mean the amount of data that you use through your cell phone provider?

There seems to be some confusion here.

I’m not really sure what you mean by data storage memory.

The iPhone has storage but it comes in 16, 32, and 64 Gigs. That is where you store Apps, photos, and music.

It also has RAM, but that isn’t upgradable and the same across all iPhones 5s’s.

The only thing that makes sense is you are talking about how much data you are pulling down from the internet when you browse.

Maybe this will help explain . . . After owning my iPhone for 3 weeks, I got a message data alert from Verizon saying I was close to going over my limit. I called them and they recommended increasing my allotment from 1 gigabyte to 2 gigabytes.

That does explain it. That is how much you are downloading. So download less or pay more.

And really, 1 Gig is almost criminal. For example the main page of Fluther (not mobile) is a hefty 1Meg. So without caching loading fluther three times a day would almost be one gig in a month.

And I suck at math. It would only be about 10% of your total. But my point is valid. Ron Paul 1012!!

A 1GB plan…. worthless.

I use my smartphone fairly lightly and end the month near 2GB. Once you get into streaming videos, we’re up to 10–25GB/month. And for those that use social networking, the constant updates will take you through at least a gig a month even without doing anything else with your phone.

You should use wifi as much as possible. It’ll cut down on your data usage.

I have unlimited.

@AstroChuck How do you still have unlimited??
What provider do you use?

AstroChuck's avatar

At&T

Ok. When you upgrade to a new phone will you still have unlimited?
I ask because I have Verizon and my son and I were grandfathered in to unlimited data….. Until they changed the rules. Now when you upgrade your phone, unless you pay full price for the phone up front, you lose your unlimited data.

I don’t know about other carriers, but with AT&T unlimited data plans carry over when you change to a new phone. Both my wife and myself were grandfathered in. My daughter was added to our account a couple years ago after AT&T stopped offering unlimited data, so she has a limit.

A data limit is a small price to pay for having reception. At least in this area, AT&T doesn’t cover many places, and most places it does cover, you lose reception the instant you step inside. Maybe acceptable for a rural area, but not for Seattle.

Katniss's avatar

@jerv That is exactly why I switched to Verizon.

@jerv- Fortunately coverage is fine in NorCal. Also I get 25% off my bill and 50% off accessories at any AT&T store with my postal discount.
