I have 5 pounds of rock hard white granulated sugar. Do you have any suggestions for using it? Like making it soft again?

You can turn it into sugar water, but I don’t think it’s possible to reconstitute it as granulated anymore.

That’s what I’m afraid of.

Throw a slice of bread in the bag, re-seal it, and leave it overnight. If not back to normal the next day, repeat.

Edit: Don’t try to shave off the sugar you need from the hard part – that tends to affect the taste somehow.

I’ll try the bread overnight tonight. Thanks.

This might be more trouble than it’s worth (so feel free to ignore). I believe you can pummel it into submission with a process that would look something like this:

Cover the block of sugar with a cloth (a pillow case might work well) and beat it with a hammer until you feel it’s in relatively small chunks.

Pour the chunks into a collander and use a potato masher or ricer to “mash and crush and twirl.” The result might be something that comes close to granulated sugar. Your stress level will go down a bit, too ;-)

^^^ I’ll try that second. Thanks.

When granulated sugar became rock hard, I used to throw it out unless I knew why it was hard. Did each lump harbour a dead insect or some impurity imported during the manufacture? Now I know better. What a friend we have in Google.

Woo Hoo! I put the sugar, out of its paper bag container, into a large plastic bag. I noticed it was not totally hard throughout. I put in a piece of bread around 5 p.m. It is now 8 p.m. and it is almost all soft! My sugar lives again! Thank you @glacial !

@Sunny2 You are very welcome! I’m glad it was a success. :)
