Do you have a silly family name for an everyday item?

“Great Question” (5points)

One, I would never think about using today:
We called the turn signal, the “Flicker.”
“Turn you flicker off, that sound is making me bonkers!”

One I still use:
Cole slaw = cold slop
My sister as a child: “Please pass me the cold slop.”

When he was two or three, our son referred to hamburger as a “ham-bugga-bah”

To this day, we still say “How about we make some ham-bugga-bahs”.

And both kids used to respond to a “thank you” with “wacca” for ‘you’re welcome’. My wife and I still say that, but over the years it somehow evolved into “wacca-doo”...

My son called M&Ms “Mips” and they were that for many years.

My mother used to tell me that when I was a wee lad I called lettuce and tomato “lessus and tomessus.”

(oh boy, @ibstubro now you’ve done it…)

Our kids used to call McDonald’s “DEE-dons”. To this day….yup….we occasionally stop at ‘DEE-dons’...

When my daughter was small she was fascinated with whales and called her nostrils her “blow holes”. lol
Also called Burritos ” Dodos” and Juice ” Ju.”
Sometimes I still tease her and when she is over will pound on the fridge and say “JU” or, lets make Dodos.

I also have called “dumpsters” ” Binsters” for some odd reason forever. haha

OneBadApple's avatar

You know what ? I think I like ‘binsters’ much better than dumpsters…

My little daughter talked about her “glubs,” one of which she always lost.

My sister and I still joke about, “It’s not irrelevant; it’s a hippopotamus.”

I was told that when I was very young, I called all four-footed domestic animals “horsie.”

HA HA when we lived in New York, our kids also wore ‘glubs’. And they never got “used to it”...but always got “usetavit”

These are “Gotchas”

Apparently when I was a kid I used to make up all sorts of weird names for things. Like a whole ‘nother language. I don;t remember any of them now though.

YARNLADY's avatar

The only one I can think of is the “mote”.

My son used to call shoes “tits”.

We call the ends of bread the “bumpers”.

OneBadApple's avatar

Seek, as long as he never calls tits “shoes”, I think he’ll remain on solid ground…

OneBadApple's avatar

And I like the term “gotchas”. We refer to those as “grabberoos”

I’ve been racking my brain and nope, I don’t have silly names. How boring am I?

kritiper's avatar

Sure do! The glove compartment in your car is a jockey box.

We call every stick figure warning sign a “Donny Don’t.” It’s a reference to a Simpsons episode.

By daughter has always been really sensitive to noise and distractions. When she was little she would say “to much moshie!” It has stuck, even though she’s 30.

I live not far from a water filter station, my daughter and I used to walk past there every day, she always called it the filtin shaytin, I still use the term today.

Go-may oatmeal. There was quick oatmeal and steel cut oatmeal, which my son dubbed Go-may oatmeal (he couldn’t say his “r’s”). It stuck to this day. Now we also have go-may dog food (homemade, not kibble or canned).

When our nieces were little they called ghosts “booses” (which kind of makes sense when you think about it).

So when in a movie something rises from the grave, my wife might say “Look….it’s a boose !”

Great, funny answers, one and all! Love it! I asked the question early in the day then had to leave and refrained from commenting on individual answers for fear of missing someone.

Thanks, the thread made my day.

Ours too, brother….

Mike Tyson’s Punch Out video game is known as Dammit in our house. When my husband plays it, we constantly hear him yelling Dammit.

When she was little my daughter called any shoes (especially heels) that make clacking noises when you walk “stampy shoes”. Once she had a pair of “stampy boots”. They were her favorite.

OneBadApple's avatar

I’m pretty sure that many of Tyson’s opponents called their fight the same thing when they woke up in the hospital…..

“Dammit !”

ibstubro's avatar

Thanks, and good to see you @Juels. Have the Blackest of Fridays! lol

I used to raise and sell Shih Tzus. We call dogfood “doodie rice” for the simple fact that the dogs were always ‘doodies’ and I cooked ground beef and rice for them when they were puppies. Oh and the puppies were called “poopers” for obvious reasons.

ibstubro's avatar

“Doodie rice” is cute. I guess you gave up raising the pups?
