How do you prevent ear ache in cold weather?

I’ve been going on really long walks in the evening but the air is so icy I am getting ear ache. I do have a pair of ear muffs but I feel so overly wrapped up. Any suggestions?

Covering your ears is the only way I know, ask yourself what option is worse, feeling overly wrapped up or suffering from earache, it’s a no-brainer as far as I’m concerned.

@Adagio Ear plugs?

Ear muffs, hat or scarf wrapped around the ears or cold ears. There don’t seem to be any other choices.

Ear plugs deaden sound or noise; they do nothing to heat the external ears. You would be both cold and deaf.

Maybe you would prefer ear covers to ear muffs? Less bulky. Although, now they have ear muffs that aren’t very bulky and the the thingy that attaches them can go behind your neck rather than over the top of your head. The covers are good for emergencies though, you can keep them in your purse since they use so little space. I almost never cover my ears, unless I walk a long distance, but my hair is over my ears. Long hair makes more of a difference than people realize.

I have a set of low-profile earmuffs made of Thinsulate. Quite warm, and less than ΒΌ” thick.

You could just wear a hat.
I often wear a hat and put my hood up over that, but I live in Alaska and it was -9 yesterday.

A warm woollen hat or a snood. I too get dreadful ear aches, and a good hat goes a long way.

The earache associated with cold wind is a sensory response to an abundance of nerves in the ear canal. There are no permanent solutions or cures, Keeping the ears warm is the only preventive measure. Wear a woolly hat, preferably one with earflaps, or wrap a scarf around your ears. You may feel overly wrapped up, but at least you are unlikely to get the terrible pain. Disposable foam earplugs also helps.

You need a Stormy Kromer. This is precisely what they were designed for. They come in both men’s and women’s sizes and designs and the flaps can be worn up or down.
