My house is 70 years old and we have no mice. We do however, have mutant slugs that sometimes crawl up from the space under the floor. I hid my kitchen bin in the cupboard under the sink and they still find it. If I could I’d fill that floor space with a ton of rock-salt.

No. You have to go after them swiftly and decisively. You must kill them all and do it quickly so they do not have time to reproduce. Put out at least a dozen traps that have been sitting in bird food. to remove the wood and human odors. Don’t wait.

Yes. It is a reasonable expectation that the house has mice.

@ibstubro My house is over 55 years old and I kill ‘em the second I see them. If I see one mouse I put out a bunch of traps and they usually catch a couple the first night. Then nothing. I leave the traps in place for a few more nights just in case. I do not give them time to reproduce. I might have to do this once a year.

Yes some old homes might have mice (and may be a friendly ghost too!)
Well maintained old houses usually don’t have. My Mom’s ancestral home is around 65 years old and my granny never complained about mice.(Could be due to the cats !)

@downtide Slugs are easy. Try a dish of beer or a seaweed barrier. Or one of these other options.

I was momentarily fascinated (on-line) with a TV show about life after the human race departed the Earth, and one point I remember more than any other was that rats and mice would be devastated, as humans are their primary source of food and shelter.

I have an auction house in the Midwestern USA, and it’s very rare to receive a consignment that does not have a mouse dropping somewhere in it.

Older houses have a larger chance of the foundation settling, and therefore there may be holes or gaps where mice could get in. However, new houses in the country are just as likely to have mice, too. Little field mice find their way in through teeny tiny holes, and humans might not even be aware that the mice are around.
