Ever paid for something and left without it?

It was so cold this morning that I just had to have some coffee. So, I pulled into McDonald’s and ordered a large French vanilla coffee. Yum. I pulled up to the first window and paid. I was merging onto the highway when I realize that I didn’t stop at the second window to pick up the coffee. I was too embarrassed to go back. I’m still wondering if they watched me drive past the window.

I nearly did that on Tuesday, but my wife reminded me that I hadn’t picked up the food yet.

@filmfann Thanks! I feel better knowing I’m not the only one.

I do it all the time too. Usually with multiple purchases and I’ll start to go back to the car and realize what I did on the way. I always go back. I can always laugh at myself when I get back inside.

That made me laugh – thanks for that. I’ve accidentally left bags of groceries on the spinny thing at the grocery store, but I’ve never forgotten to pick up my food in a drive-thru. (Then again, I take food more seriously than most. I love to eat and I can put it away, let me tell ya.) How funny.

Yes. Whole Foods. I had food in the top part of the grocery cart, and the bottom rack. I took the top bag and left the bottom. I got home and realized what I had done and went back about a half hour later and they had kept my stuff in the the customer service area. How cool is that?

I’ve done it, I usually get caught by the cashier as I’m about to reach the door. I’ve also started walking away from the counter before receiving any change. (more often than I probably should for someone as poor as me:P)

There’s usually a 20-minute lag at our pharmacy between dropping off the script and picking up the RX. So I do my shopping in the supermarket where the pharmacy lives. Often, I check out and then go straight home.

@josie You’re lucky. My hubby forgot items on the bottom of the cart once. They were never seen again.

I’m still shaking my head. Once, I forgot I had my daughter in the car and was supposed to drop her off at daycare. She was so quiet that I was almost at work before I realized she was still with me. Its like when you’re distracted by a thought and drive to work. When you get there, you don’t really remember the drive. Scary.

Hell, one time, when my son was 4, I forgot HIM when I left the house! But it was his own fault, the dumbass.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Yep. That was pretty much the look on his face when I came running back in the house about 10 minutes later, after I’d suddenly realized he wasn’t in the van with us!

Those stupid grocery bag carousel things. It’s happened more than once.

I left my change on the counter in a clothing store once. I thought my granddaughter grabbed it, and she thought I did. What a bummer. It was $20.

After cowering at home for five frozen days, today I decided to risk the 1.7 mile drive to our little post office where I get my mail. I bundled up, and cautiously negociated my treacherous long driveway in 1st and 2nd gear. Arriving successfully at the post office, I discovered that I had left my purse, with the key to my mailbox, at home. The post mistress was at lunch so the window was closed. So, home I went and home I am staying.

Is that the same as having something in the bottom tray of the basket you forget was there until you paid for everything else and left the store, then realized you left without paying for it?

dxs's avatar

@Hypocrisy_Central No. That would be stealing since you didn’t pay for it.

I’m poor, you think I forget shit? No. But actually, I did once, but the cashier actually ran out of the store to give me my purchase. It was awesome.

I’ve left some items behind at the supermarket three or four times. I get home and realize some items are missing. A bag of goods left behind I guess. I usually call the store to see if they have the items set aside. One time they did. The most recent time, just two weeks ago, they didn’t, but they told us to come back and they would give us the items. My husband went, I don’t know if I would have bothered. It was what I had bought for dinner that night and my parents were visting, so he felt compelled to do it, because I guess I seemed a little overwhelmed that I would have to come up with something else. He stressed me out at the time, but in retrospect I see he was trying to be helpful and considerate.

Juels's avatar

@Hypocrisy_Central I’ve done that before too. Was loading the car and found kitty litter I didn’t pay for. I’m so afraid of breaking the law that I took it back inside and had them ring it up.

Breaking the law equals jail without private bathrooms. I’m a ‘close the door’ freak; so I wouldn’t last an hour in jail. Great incentive to go back in and be embarrassed paying for the kitty litter.

@Juels You sound like Tom from Boondocks. :P

Oh my gosh, I’m still laughing! Loved it! Yep, that would be me.
