I know what it means, I just want to know why it’s ‘I’m just going to do my diet cold turkey.’

Like why can’t it be ‘hot salami’ or something

Numerous zoological studies have shown that turkeys need bad habits and addictions to maintain their body heat. ;-)

Heroin addicts will experience cold sweats and goose bumps if they have sudden withdrawl. It makes their skin look and feel like a turkey (before it is cooked).

“A narrowing of the meaning “suddenly or without preparation,” from cold turkey being a dish that requires little preparation; originally used for heroin addicts. From the American phrase talk turkey meaning “to speak bluntly with little preparation”.
