Why am I afraid of excercise?

I’ve always been really skinny since I was a little kid on through my teenage years but since I’ve turned 20 or so I’ve noticed an increase in my apetite and a decrease of my metabolism. I’m not as finicky about foods as I was when I was younger and I’m gaining weight. Now, I’m not overweight (or at least I don’t think so), I’m about 145lbs and I’m 5’1”. My arms are getting flabby though and so are my butt and thighs but my main concern is my tummy. It used to be nice and flat and now its not. My mom says I just need to work out a few days a week while I’m still young and I will lose it easily. But the thing is, I don’t really like excercise. Its almost like I’m afraid of it or afraid to let other people know I excercise. What is wrong with me? Does anyone else feel this way? Like they’re embarrassed about excercise?

I’d feel embarrassed to go to the gym or do weight lifting but I love going out on my bike. Maybe it’s just finding the right exercise for you?

Maybe ask a few friends to join you then you’re not alone and it’s more of a group thing.

A walk is a good place to start. Instead of sitting on the couch watching reruns get out and walk a couple of miles a day. Make it a brisk walk. Don’t just lazily walk it doesn’t do anygood.

Do something fun as exercise so it doesn’t seem like a chore. Do things likes bike rides, swimming, basketball, tennis, volleyball, dancing etc. Whatever gets you moving. Find people who like to do those things and do them together. You might have so much fun you will forget your exercising.

I am not a big fan of gym exercise such as treadmill etc. I agree with previously stated idea that if exercising is seeming hard for you, you just haven’t found the right form of exercise. I actually really enjoy doing Hip Hop Abs even though the main guy (Sean T) is kind of ridiculous. I think that’s what makes it doable though, since he always makes the stupidest jokes and acts silly, it makes exercise easier and more fun for me. I would recommend that or any other dance exercise video. Also, buster’s answer is perfect.

Here’s my bit if pocket psychology:
Maybe you don’t like – or haven’t made your peace with the idea of needing to exercise to stay in shape. If you’ve always been able to stay skinny without special effort, maybe that’s a part of how you see yourself – maybe something you’re a little proud of – and now that’s changing.

I’d support the suggestions above; instead of exercising to stay fit, take up a hobby that involves physical activity, walking, running, hiking, biking, swimming, dancing….you’ll have fun and you won’t have to worry about flab!

i agree with wildflower; i think that because you never got the hang of it in the past ten years or so, you just… never got the hang of it. where do you live? i live in new york & my primary source of excercise is walking or biking, which i do mainly to save money on transportation. could you consider that? instead of setting aside time to excercise, could you work it into your day somehow? bounce up & down on your toes while you brush your teeth. anything.

Don’t exercise, play! Go dancing. Go for a swim.
