Why doesn't the question section check my spelling?

“Great Question” (1points)

I’m using Firefox. And something has been bugging me since I first joined: When I start a question, and type in the “Question” box in desktop mode, my spellchecker never works. It works fine everywhere else, except in that question box.

Do you experience the same thing?

Yea, I’ve noticed the same. I’m not exactly sure why that happens, but it is annoying. Generally when I ask questions I just copy/paste my question in the details real quick to check for any spelling errors.

Enter about:config in your URL (address) box.

Once you’re at about:config, you’ll get a warning stating, This might void your warranty! Click on I’ll be careful, I promise!

Once you’re at the configuration page, look on the left side for a column titled Preference Names, which are arranged alphabetically.

Scroll down until you find layout.spellcheckDefault

Once you find that line, on the right end of it you’ll probably see the value set to 1.

If you right-click on that line, you should get a popup menu with Modify as the choice at the top.

Select Modify, and you should get a second popup labeled Enter integer value. Type the number 2 in the value box and press ok

Here are the definitions of the values:

0 Disable spellchecker.

1 Enable spellchecker for multi-line controls (e.g., <textarea>s).

2 Enable spellchecker for multi-line controls and single-line controls.

I think the reason Firefox uses 1 as a default is because a lot of single-line entries are for personal and street names, and the Firefox default is to not subject proper names to dictionary-based spell checking.

That is correct Brian. For things that have a clearly defined short length like your name and address it is disabled. For the question itself they are using input and on the body of the question it is a textarea.

This has been brought up enough times in the past I am actually kinda shocked they haven’t fixed it yet.

I always assumed it was because it thought I was a big boy and should check my own spelling but then, what do I know.
