If you don’t have children, do you think childrens’ summer vacations are different now compared to past generations?

More summer school instead of living with grandparents.

It’s no longer possible. They’re no longer children, but it was nearly impossible then. My grandsons will never see a day when they can spend the entire day roaming the neighborhoods parks and swimming pools totally unsupervised.

My 7 year old is going to day camp, which was what I did when I was 7.

Maybe when she’s older she’ll go to away-camp but that’s a few years down the road.

When I was young I think I had a longer holiday. I would read my book, play games, draw or just fool around. There wasn’t the internet and less entertaining choices so I could focus on one hobby more.

Now the summer can be either too little free time or too much entertaining choices. Children who take summer schools have no free time. All their time is spent on books and assignment. And the internet and high tech gadgets becomes a distraction to many. Now I can only see children holding smart phones :P

Almost exactly.

I spent my summers with my grandparents and aunt. My daughter spends her summers with her grandmother and uncle.

We had “Park League” for a week or two where we did crafts and games. My daughter goes to a week or two of fun classes (photography, tie dye, etc.)

To an extent. As a kid I spent a lot of time watching television during the summer and my kids do that! I also spent plenty of time swimming and going to the summer program put on by our local park and rec department, which they don’t do. We are lucky enough to live in a neighborhood where they can walk up to the store and spend time at the park like I used to.

My kids did go to the summer camp I went to but now they are in completely different environments.

It could never happen! Sadly, times are such that society isn’t safe enough to just turn the kids loose like we were.
