What should music be about?

“Great Question” (1points)

In lyrical forms of music, what topics are trend-worthy these days?
What topics tend to appeal to you? What topics tend to appeal to the masses?

For a Rock track, what should the song be about?
What about HipHop? What topics are worth your time?
How about House music?
etc..

About 3–4 minutes or so.

Music should be about whatever the writer wishes it to be about.

Does it really matter what is trend-worthy? Music is about expressing yourself. Music with lyrics is about telling people either your story, or what you are feeling in your heart.
Personally for me, I enjoy listening to music with a good beat, and emotions. I’m not talking about music by Taylor Swift I broke up with you because you broke my heart, and now I want to sing a song about revenge and embarrass you I guess I would say something like Swedish House Mafia’s Don’t You Worry Child and Capital Cities Safe and Sound.
That is just a couple of the songs that I like.

If you plan on writing your own songs make it something that you will enjoy. You don’t have to follow the masses, be yourself.

I have been recording music for 25 years. I once recorded a 3 minute composition using a malfunctioning toaster oven, a circular saw, and a person eating a bag of chips. This is music. It can be anything. Should has nothing to do with it.

@hominid Is that on a public album anywhere? I’m interested in hearing that song.

Okay, let’s clarify the question a bit here:

What are some topics music should be sure to include at some point within the past and future 20 years or so?

In your opinion, I mean: What would be some great topics to cover? What have been some great topics that were covered?

@shego said “Does it really matter what is trend-worthy?” – Yes. While not limited to that one attribute, it is at least one thing I’m curious about historically and theoretically. @shego said: “Music is about expressing yourself.” – Often, yes, and some such expressions must have trended more than others. I imagine the trends map out the sort of expressions people relate to en masse.

Case in point – Vietnam era protest music. While the music is absolutely dated to that period it offers a wonderful glimpse in to the culture of that time.

If I wrote songs—and frankly, I always wanted to—I’d write about my feelings.

House music? What the hell is house music? Whatever they decide to play at the time?

Music should be something that takes you away from the present and allows you to relax and enjoy 3.5 minutes of your life.

BTW @CWOTUS Good answer, that was what my first response was.
