Some people thoroughly enjoy when a movie is exceptionally bad. I am definitely one of those people. Troll 2, Toxic Avenger, Surf Nazis Must Die are a couple of my favorites.

My birthday is in a few days and, as a tradition, I take the opportunity to force all of my friends to watch another terrible movie. This year I’m having trouble picking the right one. Any suggestions?

As someone who also enjoys horrible movies sometimes, I’m always on the lookout. I haven’t seen it yet, but there’s one on Netflix that caught my attention called Grabbers: “Residents of an Irish island must get very drunk to survive attacks by alien monsters who can’t tolerate a high blood alcohol level in their victims.” I’m hoping it’s sufficiently horrible enough for me to laugh at a lot.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

It’s so bad that it’s good. To me it’s how you mix seriousness and humour together, then leave them half-mixed. When the movie tries to be serious it ends up making me laugh. And the movie’s intention is to be pure serious.

I have many terrible movie favorites, but I guess my favorite favorite is Plan 9 From Outer Space. So terrible it is, in fact, that I can’t stand to watch more than a few minutes every time I decide to re-watch it. (The movie about the making of Plan 9 and its famously weird writer/director, Ed Wood, is pretty bad, too, but it has a lot of great stuff in it, including a haunting scene in a bar in which Ed Wood (Johnny Depp) has a brief conversation with Orson Welles (Vincent D’Onofrio).

Happy birthday to you. Mine is in a few days, too.—Oct. 7. And I too will be doing something traditional… fretting about my age.

When my kids were growing up, I would have a mini film festival of movies with a similar theme or commonality.
