What is the difference between JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley?

Do they offer the same services? I researched and a lot of people said that JP Morgan focuses on commercial banking and Morgan Stanley focuses on investment banking, stocks, etc.

I went to their sites and they seem to do pretty much the same thing?

Simply put, Morgan Stanley is similar to Fidelity.com in that they provide investment management and advice. JP is a big fancy bank.

Morgan Stanley does not have a retail banking operation since they divested Dean-Witter several years ago. Their focus is on investment banking, mergers-and-acquisitions advisory, and commercial banking activities such as corporate bond issues, IPO management and securitizations.

JP Morgan/Chase has a substantial retail banking operation (the Chase part) but they also do a lot of the same sorts of investment banking as Morgan Stanley. They were heavily involved in the securitization (bundling) of sub-prime mortgages that had a lot to do with the 2008 meltdown and for which they have been investigated and fined.

Both have large trading operations, both for clients and for the in-house book, across all the big markets, commodities, foreign-exchange, equities (stocks).
