What part of the country? How big of a company?

If you are interviewing at Google (for example) my answer would be different than if it were at a 20-person employer.

Assuiming you’re a man, that sounds fine for almost anywhere but @elbanditoroso ‘s question is worth considering. Most IT professionals dress very casually in the work place but I would still dress well for an interview.

IT guys are very casual, and over dressing might look like a lack of confidence. The most important things you can project are confidence, skill, and comfort. Look like someone they want to work with.

^^ That’s why I think what the OP is suggesting sounds good. You don’t need to wear a three piece suit but a sweater and tie sounds appropriate even if the everyday wear at the place is jeans and a tee-shirt.

IT departments are sometimes very casual day-to-day, but this is an interview, and not all companies are like that. I used to work in IT wearing a tie and sport coat.

The sweater, button-down and tie sound good. Don’t wear jeans.

I think what you propose sounds stylish and nice. Wear nice shoes, be well groomed and clean hands and nails. Go easy on cologne if you wear it or wear none at all. I have interviewed people for a couple positions here lately and the ones that came in the door after smoking a cigarette or smelled like they raided the perfume department at Macy’s did not get call backs.

IT types are almost always creative nerds. I’d go for the tie dye tie. ;-)
Shows you’re an out of the box type, which translates to a subliminal “creative problem solving approach” type of guy. Here…these are quite spiffy and trendy.
