Can U-Lock Keys Be Replaced without Numbers or Registration?

“Great Question” (1points)

I’m sure this has happened to many cyclists. The keys for your lock are lost, or the key is bent. You didn’t bother to register them, or you have subsequently lost all material about it because the lock is at least 7 years old. I’m wondering what the next best steps to take for a replacement key. Can locksmiths help me? If so, what kind of locksmith? If I do have a copy of a key, can I get a copy from a locksmith?

A lot of questions there, and if any can be answered, it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, go to the Kryptonite web site and look at the FAQs. You need to send them the lock, and they will re-key it.

@elbanditoroso Thanks for the information. Unfortunately, I should have added, in my case it’s not a Kryptonite lock, but instead a “Lox Protector” lock, of which I can’t seem to find a site. However, the Kryptonite info is great!

Check this: http://www.magnum.ws/Lox/Home.htm

But they may be out of business

Is the bike currently locked up?

@johnpowell Luckily it is not. I just noticed my final key is no longer working (bent) and therefore am trying to figure out best options. @elbanditoroso thanks for the website. Was struggling to find that!

I think your easiest and cheapest option might just be to buy a new lock. As long as the bike isn’t being held hostage I wouldn’t bother with getting a new key.

And if you ever need to break a Kryptonite lock just ask. It is pretty trivial.
