If you've tried any of the chips in the latest Lay's potato chips "Do Us A Flavor" line-up, what did you think?

Kettle-Cooked Greektown Gyro, Wavy West Coast Truffle Fries, Southern Biscuits and Gravy, and New York Reuben

I first had Truffle fries and I’m unimpressed.
Today I had Gyro, and I loved them!
In the cupboard are Biscuits and Gravy. Can’t wait!
Reuben doesn’t sound all that great to me, but I’m sure I’ll sample.

Greektown gyro tastes like sweaty armpit slathered with Axe body spray.

Biscuits and gravy is too peppery.

I don’t like those foods so I don’t imagine I’ll like the potato chips.

The Reuben tastes, at first, vaguely like pastrami, but then the saltiness overwhelms what little flavor came through.
The second notes on the tongue weren’t much better. Unpleasant, but not disgusting.

The thing is though, it’s a bag of chips and I felt compelled to eat the entire things.

I love pepper, @dammitjanetfromvegas, so you add to my anticipation.

It’s doubtful that the chips taste exactly like a multi-layered sandwich or dish, @jca. It’s just for fun.

That was the cheese, @srmorgan. I’ve noticed that chip makers in the US have almost universally equated “cheese” with “salt”. Mouth-burning SALT. Your thrift is admirable!

But not in this offering, @jca

I saw those at the grocery store today. Like @jca, none of the flavors appeal to me, so there was no point in buying them. A few months ago, Lays had individual packs of Wasabi Ginger chips in the convenience stores, and those were the bomb. It’s unfortunate that it was a temporary offering.

I tried the Wasabi Ginger chips, @Pied_Pfeffer, while on the road to a get-together.
I remember saying, when I got in the truck, “I bought these because I know I’m going to hate them!”
After I bought the second bag, I never saw that flavor again.

Haven’t even tried them. I rarely eat chips, but when I do I stick with regular, or maybe the old fashioned onion and chive flavor.

Sriracha is my favorite of all. Really the only flavor I actually enjoyed. It’s a shame it came in second place the year it was available.

I haven’t tried any of them yet. The only one that I would try is the one with the truffle flavor. The others are meat based. That, in and of itself is disgusting. Why would they add meat to something that was naturally vegetarian in the first place?

I only like good old salted potato chips – Wise particularly. Not likely to waste calories on any of the flavors.

Morningstar Farms is in the business of making of making non-meat ingredients taste like meat, @Kardamom, just for vegetarians.

I think it’s fun to try new things, and it’s neat to see how close they came to their goal. The gyros are close.

@ibstubro I’m a big fan of Morningstar Farms fake meat products. I always use their fake ground beef crumbles in my vegetarian chili. Their fake breakfast sausages are good too. I make “Fake McMuffins” with them.

I just tried the biscuit and gravy flavor and I like them.

@ibstubro but there’s actual meat flavoring in them, right?

Not that I know of, @Kardamom.
I think “biscuit and gravy flavoring” was, literally, on the ingredient panel of those chips.
Gyro is not a meat, it’s a flavor, taste, or seasoning result.
I think they’re replicating tastes, not recreating them as chips.

@ibstubro If there are no actual meat products (and I wouldn’t be so sure about something listed as biscuit and gravy flavoring) I’d be totally willing to try them.

I will respectfully disagree that Gyro(food) is not a meat. It is a specific type of meat sandwich, which may be flavored with different kinds of spices.

That being said, if I could see the actual ingredients list, and be confident that they were all vegetarian ingredients, then I’d be interested to taste all of them.

I am pretty awful about trying new foods. My daughter was excited about getting sushi tonight. She asked if I’ve ever tried sushi, and I said, ”NO!

@Kardamom I’ve had any number of vegetarian/vegetable gyros, some delicious. I don’t think I’ve had one yet with a meat substitute.
Natural flavors might include animal fat? I don’t know. You’d have to ask Lays.

I’m awful about new foods, too, @Dutchess_III.
But from the other spectrum. If it’s new to me and others are eating it, I’m in. I even found a sushi I like (which was a stretch).

@ibstubro Speaking of new foods, and because I know you like to shop at the discount stores like me, I found these fantastic (and vegetarian) Plum Savory Minis at the 99 Cent Only store. They were so good, I went back and bought 6 boxes. I haven’t been to Dollar Tree since I purchased them, so I don’t know if they have them there too. Next time I’m there, I’ll check.

They’re super yummy and they’re good for you too.
