“Great Question” (0points)

In 2001 (when I was 5), when I lived in England, I came into the living room (it was evening) to find my mother and possibly my father watching this documentary. I can’t remember what it was about, other than it was about history, other than the following.

The narrator either said “The American flag was raised in Cuba after the Spanish-American War”, “After the Spanish American War, when the American flag was raised in Cuba”, “In Cuba, after the Spanish–American War, when the American flag was raised”, or “After the Spanish-American War, when the American flag was raised”.

Whatever it was, it was spoken when black-and-white footage showed the Spanish flag being taken down in Cuba and the American one being raised, accompanied by a groan of effort and a loud cheer respectively. However, I cannot remember the rest of the documentary. All I know is that the narrator spoke with an English accent.

Do any of you know what this history documentary was, please?

I’m on my phone right now, so I can’t check the accuracy of my memory, but I believe Cuba was under the protection, and therefore under the flag of the U.S. for a number of years after that war. I’ll look it up some time in the next 12 hours and verify or correct.

According to this Wikipedia article, Cuba was a protectorate of the U.S. from 1898 to 1902, following the Spanish-American War.

Try Memories of a Forgotten War

or possibly Crucible of Empire from PBS in 1999.
