DIY exercise equipment; What do you think of my solution?

Because I am largely housebound and not able to go to the gym, I was thinking about what I could use that I had on-hand to exercise with for the muscle groups I still have use of. What I ended up with was using a large piece of firewood, an 18 inch piece of oak 16 inches in diameter, and a pair of 4 pound reboundless hammers. This morning I tried the exercise for the first time. Hammering from my seated position using both hands for 5 minutes. Then resting one minute, then resuming another 5 minutes. Perhaps that was a bit much for a first trial, but I am bathed in sweat and my back, chest, shoulders and arms are like macaroni. Does this sound like a good regimen for an upper body only exercise? Are there any risks that you can think of that I might encounter doing this (besides hitting the cat that came down to see what daddy was doing)? It is my hope to beat off some pounds over the winter.

It sounds great to me, @majorrich. There was a time when no one actually did formal “exercises,” because they got all the exercising they needed through simply working hard all day.
I still make a point of pushing myself to move that heavy thing by myself instead of asking for help. I consider it “exercising.”

Over the winter I’ll be getting out less and less, but I did wheel the CROP walk a couple weeks ago and only had to be pushed the last couple of kilometers.

It all sounds good to me. Whatever you can do to work the muscles. Weights do not have to be a lot to get the muscles toned.

If you have to be in a chair or seated I would add you can take a stout and strong broom or mop handle (those you can remove the broom head or mop from) and drill a hole through each end large enough to feed small diameter rope through. Tie the rope to handles of those 5 gal you get at the home improvement store or compound, etc. comes in. Then you can put sand or water in it at weight you can handle but makes you work, and use them for curls or military presses.
