I’m trying to buy a restaurant gift cert as a wedding gift for some friends who live in Chicago. Don’t know the city myself. I’m looking for something mid-top end (ya know, $18–25 entree type place). Something that young people would like (not too stuffy, maybe even ‘hip’). Maybe something local-organic style? Any recs? Also would be interested in getting them a cooking class if there’s anywhere worth looking at for that…

I don’t know how hip it is but I thought the Parthenon in Greektown was excellent. I had the vegetarian moussaka. Opá!

I remember hearing good things about Sushi Samba. A $50 Gift certificate would be pretty decent there. You can also check out http://Yelp.com.

My girlfriend and I loved The Melting Pot. It’s a fondue restaurant, so they can practice their cooking skills over a nice and long romantic dinner. Oh, and DON’T SKIMP ON THE DESSERT! The chocolate fondue was the best foodgasm I’ve ever had.

ok, depends on your palate. since chicago is so diverse, narrow down to ethnic cuisine if possible. my pick would be “shaw’s crab house” on hubbard right next to “andy’s.” this tandem joint serves up fresh fish, crab legs, steak and other specialties along with live jazz nights. check out harry caray’s italian steakhouse as well on kinzie and dearborn.

since the possibilities are so great, i might narrow it down to something that is close to their home. do your friends have a car? maybe you could type their address into google maps and find out the name of their neighborhood and what restaurants are close.

My daughter lives in Chicago and she took me to Orange for Mother’s Day brunch. There are two in different parts of the city and they specialize in fresh squeezed juices and drinks, fruit sushi called fruishi and funky dishes of all kinds. Here’s the link:
