Well, we are a product of our times, and this includes dancing. While Ginger could do everything Fred did – “only backwards with heels on!” The question comes down to: can you dance?
Question two- what dances? Please no ‘dancing in the light of the silvery moon.’
My Mom sent us all to dancing lessons around four, as it was good for balance/coordination, etc. (and sat through 3 girls-worth of lessons).
Then came JuniorDance in JR. High. Weekly lessons with High School Football Players to teach popular steps our parents knew. One had to dress up.( I,dropped out.) Then West Side Story- film-cult dancing. On to Sixties dances on Hullabaloo, Dick Clark Dance Party, and Soul Train. To Laugh-In, etc. psychedelic dancing thru to Disco’s Saturday Night Fever, Urban Cowboy Country’s kick. I kinda stopped by and visited Swing Dancing from way back. Then called it quits.
So sorry I didn’t get to twerk. Not.
How’s about you?
Did Nancy Sinatra’s Boots Walk All Over You?
Merengue, Samba, or Tap in your genes?

I didn’t take ballet. I took contemporary dance lessons, which were called “Modern dance” when I was little. More like interpretive dance, dance how you feel, that kind of thing.

As for dancing out, I was too young for the disco era. I was more “freestyle.” I don’t really do any line dances except the Cupid Shuffle.

My junior high days included “the train” and “the macarena”. If you’re not familiar with them, let’s just say the Thriller dance would have been a gigantic step up.

By high school I had given up on social contact unless absolutely necessary, and had stopped listening to pop music, so I have no idea what was going on after 1999. I don’t feel like I missed anything.

I took disco when that was the craze. The women always looked so good.

To prepare for my son’s weddings recently I took 6 nights of lessons to learn how to not embarrass myself during the usual songs: “step touch step touch”, Electric slide, Cupid shuffle, etc. The classics.
Those lessons were priceless.

@LuckyGuy: Did you do the Cupid Shuffle?

@jca Of course. To the right , to the right, to the right, to the right. To the left….

When the teacher started that one he said it would take 5 minutes to learn and about 10 minutes to step it up a notch. I took it up a notch. Easy.

I wish I had done this years ago. Every wedding I’ve attended I’ve tended to be on the sidelines because I didn’t know what to do or felt embarrassed.
This guy fixed me. 50 years late.

But now I can do it – for the rest of my life.

I love that dance and song. What I don’t understand is why the song is never on the radio, even though it’s so popular at parties.

Well, I go back to the “Bunny Hop” in the 50’s. Ballet and tap when I was 9 and 10, improved my baseball hitting. Nancy Sutton had to get two boys to join the ballroom classes at the “Mayflower Ballroom” in Inglewood.
Junior High I had two years of “Cotillion” with manners, fencing, tumbling and ballroom dancing. I received a card with the 200 plus steps for eight different ballroom dances I learned. Was on Los Angeles TV dance show, put on by the owner of the company that gave the lessons ballroom.
