Independence is more important. It teaches the child to survive in the real world prior to having to look after themselves. It is a very good skill for them to have. They can still learn to respect others afterwards.

Self reliance. Obedience can sometimes be blind. We all need to learn to think for ourselves.

Curiosity is more important. It means the child will ask questions and eventually gain knowledge. Not asking questions out of good manners, can hold the child back intellectually.

1. Independence. Respect is earned and children shouldn’t be expected to respect anyone that doesn’t deserve it. Age is not a given for respect.

2.Self reliance. Part of independence and blindly being obedient is not part of independence.

3. Consideration. If a person is considerate well behaved usually follows on the coat tails of that.

4.Curiosity by far but curiosity and good manners don;t have to be mutually exclusive.

I don’t see why one would have to choose, but I will. I do think the age of the child matters for this Q.

But, respect for elders is very important if only for the selfish reason that they have experience in life and can teach you a lot. Then there is the whole golden rule thing.

But, under age 10 obedience is pretty important, because young kids don’t have great judgement. Adolescence is important! Kids becoming defiant is important. They exercise their disobedience with their parents as practice. We want girls especially to not be in the habit of being obedient in my opinion. Men culturally take on leadership roles in relationships still today, leaving women to often with less of a voice.

I don’t see how you can misbehave constantly and be considerate at the same time. These two things work in concert.

@Coloma: Amen to that sister. Much of my traditional Italian family does not see it that way. They’re more inclined to imply that, “I can treat you poorly and you should still respect me because I am your aunt/uncle/mother/etc.”

And “respect” generally means “do what I say”.

Clearly, I want children to be raised to be like me.
