We are society – it is not some amorphous blob. I grew up with a mother who always used the “that’s what they are wearing” rule. I never understood who they were.
The usual scenario is that the teenager needs to think of an original and yet untried way to get up his parents’ nose. Certainly this has been the case in this country since the 60s liberated the HS kids from the control and “father-knows-best” attitude.
I was a docile child of the 50s. My sister was a much freer spirit of the 60’s. My kids were late 70’s and early 80’s. Hair was permed, hair was straightened, hair was long, hair was bushy, hair was ironed, heads were shaved, hair was purple and orange…
