Not yet. I have sort of nebulous plans for a nerdy back piece that includes a Cylon heavy raider facing off against a Romulan D’deridex vessel. They won’t be to scale, but the similar head shapes of the ships amuses me. I also want to add in the circle-A atheism symbol, and a caffeine molecule, and my SCA coat of arms and livery badge, and maybe some iron age symbolism.

I believe I’m the only bluewater sailor in the world that has no tattoos. They are way too permanent for my lifestyle. I earned the right to have Neptune on my pec or delt last year by soloing across the Equator, but I can’t find a style that I can live with for the rest of my life.

I’m too old to mess with it now, but I think some tattoos can be unobtrusively artistic and I generally prefer those without outlining.

I have a few flowers, a bird, a firedancer, turtles, a sun, a rendition of my boy cat Mushroom who died, a fairy, a butterfly with a cat face in it. Only two are colored. The others are solid black. I have a few more I want to get.

Completely happy with them all.

Sigh… When I was 17 I got the bar code for Top Raman tattooed since I thought it would be cool to run over a supermarket scanner. In my defense I was drunk.

A barcode on my left wrist. The reason for getting it was kind of a reaction to these paranoid fundamentalist Christians I was raised with/by (such as my grandmother and aunt), who claimed that barcodes were the Mark of the Beast and that we’d all have to be implanted with a barcode (or some similar such) that could be scanned by any authority, and that if we didn’t have this we’d be unable to purchase goods, travel freely, etc.

As far as the specific UPC I simply copied the bardcode off a pack of Marlboros.

No. I’m very very glad I never did a tattoo when I was young. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t like it by now. Better not to do something so permanent I think. Tastes change. Especially, in a place difficult to cover up. I always tell young people that if they must tattoo, do it in an area easily covered by summer clothing.

Which is partly why I think some Jewish people don’t tattoo, and totally separate from the Nazi thing the idea that Jews can’t be buried in Jewish cemeteries, but some Rabbis are ok with it.

I’ve got a Celtic knot on my shoulder blade. I rarely see it or think about it. No regrets but I wouldn’t do it again since it hurt a lot and I don’t see the point in it now. I do like the shock element it has for other people – I’m quite a straight-laced sort of person so when people find out I have a tattoo they find it surprising.

No! I can remember the names and birth dates of my children: I’m not from a tribe. I like to vary art on display I am not getting paid to advertise a product. I would rather spend my money and time on something else. There are already enough ways to get infected. I don’t need to introduce another vector. And they are not popular in my my circle of friends.

Besides, I’m over 50 with a healthy testosterone level. I’m hairy. I’d have to shave to make it visible.

I have six. Each one celebrates an event or a person in my life, each is artful and beautiful. My oldest ink is almost 40 and still recognizable as what it depicts, my most recent happened last summer. All are animal themed. Like @tinyfaery, I have never, for a minute, regretted a single one. There are likely more in my future.

None, but I don’t mind them on ladies for some reason. I have seen some pretty bad ones though. If it’s really a work of original art then odds are it will look tasteful and be more or less timeless. If it is a fad like all of those lower back tattoos and tribal bands people did a decade or so ago then regret is in your future. Anything pop culture based is probably a bad idea too. Tattoos that mark some kind of achievement like climbing everest are ok in my book.

There was a Q a few years ago about the lower back tattoos. The girls who had them didn’t like that the tattoo is perceived in a very sexual way. There is a name for it, I don’t remember what it is.

The name for it is tramp stamp, which is a shame. It’s really an ideal location for so many types of pictures as it presents a symmetrical, softly curved surface and is easy to cover.

I think the ones with misspelled words are hillarious, but after I stop laughing and think about it for awhile, I feel sorry for the guy for a multitude of reasons. And there are the ones with the Chinese ideographs. I wonder if they’ve really done their homework before they have these done, or did they just go to the same guy who spells “In Memoriam” with a “u”? It could say anything for all the wearer knows. I do like some of the tribal stuff and the colors nowadays are absolutely wild.
