Should I install the McAfee anti-virus that comes with my netbook?

I have a new Acer netbook that I bought a few months ago and just recently started using. I use it for internet and storing some photos. I don’t do work on it, don’t write any letters or anything with it.

I just got a reminder that it comes with McAfee anti-virus and would I like to install it now. The next step is create a password, etc. The prompts said something about learning about other McAfee products and managing my subscription.

What I don’t want is something where I get prompted constantly to purchase shit that I don’t want. What I would like is if this is a useful product and it works, I’d like to utilize it.

Should I or should I do without it?

I.M.O. Don’t. Get one of the free programs like AGV

I personally hate McAfee (see this question about the unintended effects it had on my computer) so I too would recommend one of the free alternatives such as Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG, or Avast.

You are better off without it. McAfee annoys me to no end. It is more interested in pestering me to pay money for it than actually scanning anything. When I click on “scan”, it finds a bunch of viruses and system errors that I doubt are legit to this day. Then after the “good” deed, it asks me “Do you want to get rid of them? Then pay some money for me.” I feel like I’m being trolled. Better go for another anti-virus that actually does the job.

God, no. McAfee is terrible. I’ve used AVG and Avast, and had no serious problems with either, except for the annoying reminders to do stuff – which is part of the reason I hated McAfee in the first place. Now I’m using Windows Defender, which is not a hugely popular choice, but I’m not particularly virus prone, and I have been fairly competent at getting rid of them when they do occur (I think I had my last one about 6 years ago). Between this and Malwarebytes, I doubt I will ever pay for anti-virus software again.

I agree. MacAfee tends to cause more problems than other anti-virus solutions.

I just use the embedded Microsoft security.

I wouldn’t. McAffee is piggishly heavy in terms of slowness, disk space, memory usage – running it slows everything down.

Almost anything other than McAffee. THe price may be right, but McAffee is a pig of a program.

With anti-virus, you get what you pay for. MacAfee is not bad, but it is not the best.
