Many times food cravings are our bodies way of telling us something is lacking in our diet, so what does my body want that I crave bread and butter?

Lay out several items in front of me, various fruits, meats, vegetables, etc and I will go for the bread and butter every time. Snack time, lunch time, even dinner. If it is just me, a sandwich it is.

That apple looks delicious. pick up that bread That peach smells wonderful. The bread, go for the bread What do you want body!? What is it you need!?

If no bread is available then crackers will do, or tortillas. To me just the same thing in a different form.

According to WebMD, carb cravings indicate low serotonin levels. and probably cancer

Your body is craving simple carbs. Not sugars, such as fruit, but carbs.

I was on a very low carb diet one time, had not had bread or crackers for two months, and ate a single piece of gluten free bread. Later that day I had a very hard time going past a display case full of croissants and cookies, I was really craving them.

Maybe you are craving the carbs for reasons mentioned, or, maybe, you just like bread and butter! As long as you don;t weight 400 lb. and have loaves of bread and sticks of butter hidden all over your house, car and office I wouldn’t worry about it.
I could eat french bread with butter or spinach dip until I exploded. haha
Why not just have the B&B AND the apple or peach?

There, problem solved!

I agree with @Coloma. Sometimes I crave something like poached eggs on toast or some kind of sweet I haven’t eaten for years (like a Millionaire) and realize it’s something I loved when I was a child. I just chalk that up to a wave of nostalgia and perhaps a bit of momentary insecurity.

I love butter on rye, rolls, bagels, etc, by the way. Sometimes, usually in late afternoon or even late at night, I get a craving for one of those, and if I don’t have a bread product in the house I go to bed feeling slightly deprived.

@Coloma Yeah – I pretty much indulge my cravings and just watch my weight and health. I love carbs and sweets as well and just try for moderation.

Often if there is great bread and butter at a restaurant, I really don’t want much else! And I have been known to take a walk on the boardwalk and then have a hot fudge sundae for supper as a summer outing.

@janbb Yes, bread, butter, salad and a little cheese is a meal for me.

I saw a documentary about this. Carbohydrates on their own are boring. Fat on its own is disgusting but the combination is food magic. We are programmed to eat this stuff by the bucket. Any moreish item, if you look at its ingredients, is the perfect storm of carbs and fat. Doughnuts? Check. Ice cream? Check. Bread and butter? Check.

@Seek just stole my thunder. Serotonin. Before I really got my stress and exercise under control I’d be hit with SAD in the darker months of the year. Biggest thing that indicated it was about to happen was a relentless craving for bread, pizza crust and muffins. So much so I learned breadmaking. Be warned it can make you feel worse in the long run. Get exercise, maintain your vit D levels get plenty of sleep…take your b vitamins…and be on the lookout for low mood. Hopefully that is not it and you just have run of the mill cravings.

Cravings are an odd thing. When I was pregnant I used to get cravings for McDonald’s cheeseburgers. Not just any cheeseburger, it had to be McDonalds. I wondered what the pioneer women did when they got cravings for McDonald’s cheeseburgers…..

@Dutchess_III When I was pregnant with my daughter I craved Raisin Bran. haha
I must have eaten 80 boxes of raisin bran during my pregnancy. I still love raisin bran. lol

Dutchess_III's avatar

What did pregnant women do before that stuff was invented?!

Coloma's avatar

@Dutchess_III Yeah, what did Pioneer women do when they had cravings? Binge on beef jerky or biscuits? lol

I wonder if we ever get cravings for things but have no idea what foods would satisfy that craving? I mean, like, octopus or ants or something.

That’s why we spend so much time staring at the inside of the refrigerator.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Have you ever walked into the kitchen to get something, forgotten what you went in there for, but think that staring inside the fridge will jog your memory? “Oh yeah! Scissors.”

I have been on an Otter Pop bender the last 2 weeks. I cut open 3 or 4 at a time and put them in a tall plastic glass and set them next to me so they can slightly melt and get all nice and slushy. haha
I feel guilty because of all the high fructose corn syrup which is bad for my cholesterol but fuck it, we gotta die of something right? Might as well be Otter Pops. lol

I craved sparkling mineral water and cinnamon when I was pregnant. I was probably low in magnesium. I had no morning sickness. After 6 months of breast feeding I lost the 20 lbs. I was carrying before I got pregnant.

You’re craving carbs and sodium, maybe?
