Have you ever volunteered as a tutor/homework helper?

“Great Question” (2points)

I’m volunteering next month as a reading/writing tutor and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m not planning on becoming a teacher, but I still love helping others learn. So for those that have tutored kids, how was the experience? Was there a certain child that you inspired and genuinely made a positive impact?

Briefly for math at the CC when I was a student. I was a teaching assistant for a systems programming and an embedded programming course. I though it was rewarding. Many asked me for general career advice, I think that’s where I made a small difference.

No, but I was a paid tutor during college. My subject was differential equations. A little different from your situation as I was tutoring people who were approximately my age, and the program I worked for was a group tutoring program, so I was often managing a group of 5+ kids at once. It was also a walk-in type deal, so I didn’t necessarily see the same kids every week, although I often did have repeat students.

I loved it, it felt great to help my peers, especially because college professors so frequently just don’t really give a fuck about whether they’re explaining things in an understandable way. I loved coming up with creative ways to explain different difficult topics in calculus, and the longer I tutored (I did it for 3 years of college), the more often I was able to achieve the coveted “aha” moment with my students.

It was also some of the best leadership and public speaking experience I got prior to going into the workforce.

I didn’t volunteer, but I was paid. I liked it. The student did better in school.

I also was a teacher’s helper in a classroom for an hour a day at one point, and the kids I helped did much better. They all went up at least one grade letter in the subject I helped them with. Some went up two grade letters.

Tutored for pay in high school. Kevin needed to pass math in summer school to get his diploma. His mom paid me 8 times the minimum wage to come over and tutor him, by the end of the first session I figured out Kevin eyes glassed over at about 10 minutes.
Change of tutoring after 10 minutes we would talk about hot rods, he had a 32 Ford with an 1959 Olds engine. Ever ten minutes we would focus on something he liked and would go for a couple minutes on the new topic. His final at the end of school was C+ his mom told me that was his highest score for an exam.

Not kids, and not homework, but I’m currently volunteering to tutor two of my friends for their upcoming exam. Long story short: the exam is for a certificate that is crutial for graduation and is nortorious for being nearly impossible well, at least for people with little experience with English anyway. I passed it a long time ago and the friends wanted me to help them because they can’t afford a tutor. I have been their tutor since the summer. They pay for my meals. That sounds cheap but I really don’t want to force them to pay. Money problem is the reason why they turned to me in the first place. It’s just the thought that I’m giving some random kindness is enough.
