It depends on the climate. Mine are the short-haired, earless La Manchas and thrive well in the heat of the tropics. The nannies are very docile and give a creamier milk than the run-of-the-mill goat. High cream content is necessary to make good butter and cheese and many goats just don’t give enough per milking to make cheese and butter worth the effort.
The goats mentioned by @Coloma above are very good milkers, too, but have long, shaggy coats and are better for more temperate climates and mountains. They probably wouldn’t be comfortable in the tropics and when an animal isn’t happy, the milk is affected in quantity and quality.
I named my three nannies after female characters in the book Don Quixote, the man from La Mancha: Ali, for Alessandra; Dori for Dorotea and Juana. The ram is called Ambrosio because he often stinks to high heaven. But the girls seem to like that.
