Windows computer won't connect to WiFi Printer, suddenly.

Hi! I have an HP All-in-one PC running Windows 7 in my kitchen, a Mac Mini in my office and a Canon MX870 wifi printer, all connected via a Mac Airport Extreme. Everything was working great for a long time, then all of a sudden, a couple of weeks ago) the printer just won’t connect. Both computers and all of our mobile devices are working fine hitting the internet. I get the Mac to print again, but the PC says “no printer found.” Even after reinstalling printer drivers from the original install CD. Any ideas? Could the Wifi transmitter on the printer go bad? Could the Airport decide one day that it doesn’t like the printer? Thoughts?

We have a wifi printer copier in our office and not long ago the computer of the new employee stopped communicating with the printer. I simply deleted the printer from the printer folder and had the computer search for and reload the drivers. Been working fine since. Perhaps someone else here will have a better solution for you.

So the Mac stopped printing at the same time, but then started being able to again? Do you know what happened on the Mac to get it to print?

If the Mac is able to get to the printer over wifi, then naturally it’s not that the printer has just stopped using wifi.

A work-around could be that if the printer and Windows computer are stationary and close enough in the kitchen, you could connect them with a cable (printer or USB).

If the Mac and Windows didn’t really stop talking to the printer at the same time, it could be that Windows did an update which had a side-effect on the wifi connection to the printer. If you did an uninstall and reinstall that should fix it, but it might not if the uninstaller doesn’t really remove all configuration data, and the installer doesn’t make changes to existing configuration data, which can be an issue on Windows software sometimes.

One thing that can mess with wifi reception is other wifi devices. I have had problems sometimes when I have a computer with multiple wifi devices (e.g. wireless keyboard, wireless mouse, wifi network adapter, wireless speakers) particularly if they are plugged into USB ports on the computer that are close to each other – they can easily jam signals. Other wifi devices that aren’t even connected could also be interfering with signals, so you can try moving and unplugging and turning off anything you have that does wifi other than the printer, and see if that lets the computer find the wifi signal from the printer.

As @Cruiser wrote delete the printer. ALSO delete the Canon software.

Install new software downloaded from Canon (not from CD), there probably have been updates since the CD was made.

@Call_Me_Jay‘s solution has always worked for. I have a similar set-up and have had the same issue. Problem is likely an auto update. Once you reinstall the LATEST Canon software all should be well.

If you’ve received an automatic update for either the printer or the Airport, I would suspect that. Reboot the network and see if that helps. Otherwise you might have to roll back your software. Worst case? It’s a firmware problem and you’re in for a bumpy ride.
