Thanks, Loli, but her strong voice for those still languishing with mental illness is now silent. We need people who can command the attention of the media to bring more light to this darkness that is mental illness.

I am happy that she had the role in The Force Awakens. She had a good last year and was in the public eye a lot.

She had a great career off-screen, too. Just a taste from Wikipedia:

Yesterday, I left a movie early, because I had an anxiety attack there in the dark in the theatre. Ms. Fisher had lived experience with mental illness. She would have instinctually understood me. I identified with her.

I was so hopeful she would make it. I agree that she has been a staunch advocate for recognition of the needs, experiences and rights of those with mental health problems. She was also a very talented writer. And she was funny and unique and honest. Very sad news. I hope Death lets up now. I don’t want to wake up to such news again for quite a while.

Man, she was in seemingly good shape, no bad habits, just goes to show you never know when your number might be up regardless of ones health habits. A LOT of people die in their 50’s & 60’s, a lot.

I really thought she was going to make it. I heard her mother, Debbie Reynolds, make a statement on the radio yesterday that she was stable in the ICU. This is just such a shock. Me and my best friend went to see the original Star Wars 8 times over the summer the year that it came out. I love her in When Harry Met Sally too, she was hilarious. Just a neat woman. I’m really bummed out about this.

RIP to a fabulous woman. I connected to her through her writing – Postcards from the Edge, Surrender the Pink and others. Of many Hollywood peeps, she’d have been my let’s-have-a-coffee-and-talk person.

Long distance flights are notoriously hard on the body. Wouldn’t surprise me a bit if they found a blood clot in her heart like what killed Gary Shandling this spring.

What can be said that hasn’t already been said. Like pretty much everyone else of my generation I grew up watching her as princess, senator, general, all-around-ass-kicker Leia Organa.

Well I can’t speak to her recent habits, but her past has been anything but healthy. She’s always been pretty open and honest about her heavy drug and alcohol use.

@Darth_Algar Yes, and I guess she was a smoker as well. I didn’t know that.
Oh well, I was a 70’s person too and everyone did drugs, I don’t think it’s fair to bring peoples pasts up, we’re all flawed to one degree or another. I could have died that wild night in 1976 when I was stuck in a tree house all night on some hardcore acid. Oh what a night! lol

I’m really sad to hear she died. I liked her so much. She and her sister (Joely, I don’t know much about the other one) and her mom are really great. I loved listening to them in interviews. They seemed very funny and real and smart. My heart goes out to her mom especially. Losing a child is so horrible.

It’s not bringing her past up, it’s acknowledging the woman as she presented herself. There’s nothing unfair or disrespectful in that. She was beautiful, intelligent, funny, witty, a skilled writer and an addict who suffered from mental illness, and she owned all of it.

But more to the point, my post simply a statement that she did not lead a healthy lifestyle. That is fact that she never shied away from. It is also fact that heavy drug and alcohol abuse, the kind of which she engaged in for years, takes its toll on one’s body, with the consequences often manifesting years after the fact (even after years of sobriety).

She has always been open about her struggles with drugs and alcohol. She was struggling even very recently. I strongly suspect though that it will eventually come out that it was indeed a blood clot from the plane ride that did her in. she had also lost a lot of weight and if she did it too quickly this could have also caused heart problems, perhaps making preexisting heart issues worse.

@Darth_Algar I never meant to insinuate it was you bringing up the past, just that it doesn’t matter. Yes, she was all of the things you mentioned and those traits trump whatever her struggles were.

@ARE_you_kidding_me I’d agree, I just read an article about the dangers of long flights and heart attacks. Regardless of her habits anyone over 50 is at risk for these conditions.
