There’s nothing in the Catechism about role-playing games. There may be individual Catholic clerics (see what I did there) or conservative activists who borrow a page from the Evangelicals and get upset about it, but there is no official teaching against D & D per se. But like many things that are not inherently bad, D & D can be used for improper purposes if people choose.

@RedDeerGuy1 Who says they ever did? D&D is not occult, it is fantasy for boys who aren’t adept at socializing.

And Lutheran ministers are a far fetch from Roman Catholics.

@zenvelo They went over board in the 70’s with the episode of Mazes and Monsters. From a college kid going nuts. The bible talked about not focusing to deeply on demons lest you become one.

@RedDeerGuy1 What does a Tom Hanks movie have to do with the Catholic Church? It is insulting you smear the church with your game, nobody cares if you go play in your fantasy.

@RedDeerGuy1 The Catholic Church has no official position on D&D. It was mostly evangelicals and fundamentalists who accused the game of encouraging witchcraft and suicide, but they have mostly moved on these days.

@zenvelo The movie is anti-D&D propaganda pushed by religious conservatives. That’s the connection. There was a lot of moral panic regarding role-playing games in the 80s. There’s even a Chick tract about it. The Catholic Church was never really involved with the hysteria, but I can understand @RedDeerGuy1‘s confusion.

I’ve never heard of the Catholic Church in particular having an problem with D&D and thee like. That’s more of a evangelical thing.

This isn’t new but is mostly a niche thing amongst arch conservatives Catholics and Bible-thumping malcontents. I once knew a someone who went on an actual crusade to get all references to yoga, multiculturalism, and death banned in their local public school and making sure that all fantasy role-playing games were banned on school property as well. God rest her soul, but homegirl needed to take a chill pill and get a hobby, STAT.
